Fold the fitted sheet, flat sheet and one pillowcase into a compact bundle, then tuck it inside the matching second pillowcase. That free, single-unit method keeps each set together and makes it easy to grab from the closet. Sort bundles by bed size or room, and label the shelf if several people put linens away.
Make each sheet set a grab-and-go bundle
- Gather the matching pieces. Put the fitted sheet, flat sheet and one pillowcase together.
- Fold them into a compact rectangle. Fold excess fabric inward so the bundle has a neat, even shape.
- Use the second pillowcase as a cover. Slide the folded bundle inside, then fold the open end in so the package sits flush.
- Sort the bundles. Group them by bed size or by room, and label the shelf or storage zone if multiple people use the closet.
The matching pillowcase works as a free container; no special organizer is needed to keep the pieces together.
Clear out surplus linens before organizing
Remove sheets that are worn out or no longer needed, then make room for the sets you use. Professional organizer Kelley Jonkoff told Martha Stewart that having more sheets than needed is the biggest challenge to keeping them together: extra similar sets create more pieces to sort and more opportunities for mix-ups. The article describes two sets per bed as a rule of thumb, not a requirement or a measured standard.
Choose storage that fits your closet
| Closet setup or need | Storage option | Trade-off or detail |
|---|---|---|
| Open shelf with ordinary stacks | Stack pillowcase bundles by size or room; add shelf dividers if piles lean or shift. | Simple and inexpensive; the bundles remain visible. |
| High shelf or preference for contained storage | Use canvas bins or smooth wire baskets, sorting by size or room. File bundles vertically inside a bin for visibility. | Containment helps keep sets together and works when you prefer not to fold precisely. Natural-weave baskets can snag sheets. |
| Delicate silk or satin sheets | Roll the sheets and store them on their ends. | Avoid rough, snag-prone baskets. |
| Closet with a rod and sturdy hangers | Hang folded sheet sets; for seldom-used sets, use a hanging storage bag to enclose them. | Reduces folding work, but exposed hanging sheets can gather dust if they are not rotated. |
| Rod but no shelves | Add a hanging fabric organizer to create shelf-like cubbies. | The cited article says each cloth shelf can hold one to two sets. |
| Guest or seasonal bedding used infrequently | Use vacuum-sealed storage bags. | Saves space and keeps sets dust-free; it is better suited to occasional access than everyday bedding. |
When a sheet-set band may help
If you want a reusable separator or a visible size cue, elastic sheet-set bands are an optional alternative to the pillowcase bundle. QE Home’s Bedding Bundlers are sold as a two-piece set in Twin, Double, Queen and King sizes. The product page lists a 70% polyester, 30% spandex composition and dimensions of 12.5 by 2 inches unstretched. The bands are designed to wrap around folded or rolled sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases; QE Home cautions against double-folding the elastic tightly. Price and availability can change.

Make the closet easy for everyone to use
Where several people reach into the closet to put sheets away or take them out, label the shelf or bin with its room or bed size. Certified professional organizer Cary Prince told Martha Stewart that labels remove guesswork about where linens belong and which set to use. Keep each bundle in its labeled zone so the sorting system is clear at both ends: when putting laundry away and when making a bed.
