What Extra-Wide Hangers Do

Measure the Garment and Closet
First measure the garment from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. Lou Hansellโs sizing guide recommends choosing a hanger that does not extend beyond those seams. Then check the actual closet fit with the garment on the hanger: measure usable depth from the hanging point to the closed door or other obstruction, and make sure the garment neither rubs the back wall nor gets compressed by the door.
Loweโs recommends at least 24 inches of closet depth so clothes clear the back wall. This is planning guidance, not a code requirement or a guarantee for every garment, hanger, or door arrangement. A shallow closet systemโs listed minimum depth is not necessarily adequate for clothes on extra-wide hangers.

Also check the rod diameter and hook clearance. Lou Hansell says its hangers fit rods up to 33 mm (1.29 inches) in diameter; that specification applies to its own products and should not be generalized to all hangers.
A Practical Fit Check
- Measure the garment between its shoulder seams.
- Compare that measurement with the hangerโs listed width and shoulder shape; avoid a hanger that extends past the seams.
- Check the hanger hook against the closet rodโs diameter and available clearance.
- Hang the garment in the intended position and close the door. Check for rubbing against the back wall, door, trim, or adjacent clothing.
- Estimate rod space for the garments. Use Loweโs 2โ3 inches per jacket or suit as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
Closet Systems and Depth
Closet-system dimensions are product-specific. For example, Rubbermaid lists its cited Expandable Deluxe Closet Kit for closets at least 14 inches deep. That describes the kitโs fit specification; it does not prove that ordinary clothes on wide hangers will clear a door at that depth.
When a hanger does not fit, check the actual obstruction and hanging point before replacing the closet system. The issue may be door clearance, usable depth, rod placement, or the garmentโs projectionโnot simply the hanger width.
