Which “ladybugs” are gathering indoors?
In fall and winter, insects commonly called ladybugs inside homes are often multicolored Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis). They seek sheltered places to overwinter. Outdoors, these beetles are beneficial predators of aphids and other soft-bodied insects, so the goal can be to exclude them from the house without killing them. Not every insect casually called a ladybug is the same species.

How do I keep ladybugs out of my house?
Preventing entry is the most effective long-term approach. University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension says, “The best way to manage Asian ladybugs is to prevent them from getting inside the home in the first place.” Do the inspection and repairs before local fall beetle movement begins; the calendar varies by location. UNH calls particular attention to south- and west-facing sides of a home.

Inspect the exterior
- Check around window and door frames, trim joints, and transitions in siding.
- Look for gaps where utility pipes and wires enter the building, and inspect vent openings.
- Check window and vent screens for holes or loose edges.
Small openings can matter: Ask Extension reports that lady beetles can fit through gaps as small as 1/8 inch. That is a practical warning from that source, not a universal measured threshold for every species or building.

Seal and repair appropriately
- Caulk suitable fixed cracks and gaps with a sealant appropriate for the material and exposure. Exterior silicone or silicone-acrylic caulk may suit some locations, but no single sealant fits every surface.
- Repair damaged screens with mesh or a screen-repair kit suited to the opening.
- Do not block required ventilation or seal moving parts shut.
Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends sealing entry sites as the best method of keeping multicolored Asian lady beetles out. For inaccessible gaps or persistent entry, a building-envelope or pest-exclusion professional may be able to identify openings that are difficult to reach.
How can I get rid of Asian ladybugs in my house without killing them?
Choose a removal method based on how many beetles are inside and whether you want to release them. A jar is easiest for a few; vacuuming can be faster for larger groups, but it does not guarantee a harmless capture.

Handle them without crushing
Swatting or crushing beetles can release yellowish or orange defensive fluid that may stain walls, rugs, upholstery, and other fabrics. For occasional hand collection, a jar with a lid is sufficient to carry them outdoors.
Should I use insecticide indoors?
Do not make indoor pesticide use the default response to seasonal beetles. UNH Extension says insecticides are not recommended for this seasonal problem; Virginia Cooperative Extension says they generally are not recommended except in severe cases. Start with exclusion and physical removal. These recommendations concern seasonal lady beetles, especially multicolored Asian lady beetles, and are not a blanket rule for every insect or situation.

When should I seal gaps?
Complete inspection and repairs before the local fall movement begins. Timing depends on region: Ask Extension recommends repairs by the end of September, while Virginia Cooperative Extension describes entry beginning in early fall. Treat these as regional guidance, not a universal deadline; if beetles are already appearing, make suitable repairs as soon as practical and remove those indoors gently.
