To keep ladybugs out, inspect your home’s sunny exterior sides for small gaps around windows, doors, siding, eaves, vents, the foundation, and utility lines. Seal fixed cracks with suitable exterior caulk, tighten moving edges with weatherstripping, and repair damaged screens. Do this before the local fall congregation period, when multicolored Asian lady beetles look for sheltered places to overwinter.
Where are the ladybugs getting in?
“Ladybug” can refer to different species. The fall home invader discussed here is the multicolored Asian lady beetle, which gathers on sunny building exteriors and seeks protected spaces to overwinter. Start your search outside rather than assuming beetles entered through an open door.

Walk around the home in good light, beginning with the warm, sunny sides—especially southwest-facing exposures. Health Canada notes that shady areas are less affected. Look for small openings at places where building materials meet or where something passes through the exterior.

- Joints where siding, trim, or other materials meet.
- Eaves, roofline gaps, attic openings, and vents.
- Cracks in the foundation and gaps around pipes, cables, or other utility penetrations.
- Holes in window or door screens, or screens that do not fit tightly.
Check the attic and basement as well as the living areas. A beetle may enter a wall or attic space through an exterior gap, then find its way into a room through a second, less visible opening. Virginia Tech identifies gaps around ceiling lights and exhaust fans, cracks behind baseboards, and ill-fitting attic access doors as possible routes into interior spaces.

Match the repair to the opening
Choose a repair that closes the gap without interfering with how the door, window, vent, or other building feature is meant to work. Product choice depends on the opening, the surface, outdoor exposure, and fit; the sources do not establish a best brand or product model.

For a straightforward fixed crack, clean and prepare the surface according to the caulk maker’s directions, then apply exterior caulk to close the gap. Use a caulking gun if required by the product. If an opening is high or inaccessible, involves damaged construction, or cannot be sealed safely, have a qualified contractor or pest-exclusion professional assess it.

Seal before fall activity begins
Complete inspection and exclusion before beetles start congregating on buildings in fall. The timing depends on local conditions. Virginia Tech’s guidance for Virginia describes early-fall entry and an activity peak around October 15; that is a regional observation, not a date to apply everywhere. Use local seasonal conditions to decide when to inspect.

Sweep or vacuum beetles rather than crushing them. Their defensive fluid can have an unpleasant odor and stain surfaces. If you vacuum them, empty the canister so they cannot escape and dead insects do not attract carpet beetles; if your vacuum uses a bag, Health Canada advises sealing and discarding it. Spring sightings can be beetles that entered the previous fall and emerged from sheltered spaces. Virginia Tech says multicolored Asian lady beetles do not reproduce indoors.

Health and pesticide considerations
Health Canada says ladybugs do not sting, transmit disease, or infest food supplies. Virginia Tech says multicolored Asian lady beetles do not infest food, clothing, or wood, while noting that some people may have allergic reactions. These statements concern the sources’ described insects and should not be taken as a blanket assessment of every beetle or an individual’s health risk.
Pesticide rules depend on jurisdiction. Health Canada states, “No pesticides are currently registered for the control of ladybugs.” That is a Canadian regulatory statement. U.S. extension guidance discusses limited preventive perimeter treatments in its own jurisdiction, discourages indoor foggers, and emphasizes exclusion. Check local rules and product labels rather than treating guidance from another country as applicable where you live.
