Support the door at its final height and overlay while marking, drill only the specified pilot holes, and use the hinge’s adjustment screws to align the finished door. There is no universal cup setback or bracket position: hinge model and cabinet measurements determine the layout.
Identify the cabinet and door configuration
A face-frame cabinet has a frame attached to the front edges of the cabinet box. Before choosing hardware, determine how the closed door sits against that frame:
- Inset: the door sits inside the frame opening.
- Partial overlay: the door covers part of the frame, leaving some frame visible.
- Full overlay: the door covers most or nearly all of the frame at the opening.
If you are replacing a hinge, note the existing door position and hole pattern, but do not assume the old hinge is the right fit for a new door or layout. Measure the actual overlay or opening and check the hinge maker’s chart, template, and current instructions.
Choose a hinge that fits the layout
Face-frame compatibility and door position are essential: a hinge designed for a different cabinet construction or overlay may not place the door correctly. Blum’s COMPACT line is made for face-frame cabinets and includes partial- and full-overlay choices. Its listed models illustrate why model-specific details matter:

Gather the right tools and layout information
Use the hinge’s supplied template or stated dimensions, along with a drill and the specified bits and screws. A self-centering bit can help position screw holes in the hinge’s designated locations, as shown in the Ana White concealed-hinge guide. The correct pilot-bit size, hole depth, cup setback, and screw length depend on the selected hardware; do not infer them from another hinge’s instructions.

A door mounting jig is optional. Kreg says its Cabinet Door Mounting Jig is for face-frame or frameless cabinets and accommodates inset doors and overlays up to 2 inches. It helps hold and position a door; it is not a substitute for a hinge template and should not be treated as a cup-boring tool. See the Kreg jig owner’s manual for its setup and use.
Install the hinges and position the door
- Lay out the door-side hardware. Use the selected hinge’s template and dimensions to mark the cup or other door-side mounting points. If the hinge requires a cup hole, verify its diameter, depth, and setback against that model’s instructions. The Ana White guide illustrates placing a hinge in a bored cup, squaring it, predrilling screw locations with a self-centering bit, and fastening it.
- Fasten the hinge to the door. Keep the hinge square to the door edge and use only the specified screws and pilot-hole method. Do not transfer dimensions or screw assumptions from a different hinge system.
- Support the door at its intended position. Hold it at the desired height and overlay, or use a compatible mounting jig to support it. Check that it is level and consistently positioned before marking the frame. A jig can make this step easier, but it does not establish the hinge’s required bracket location.
- Mark the frame-side holes. Open the hinge against the inside edge of the face frame and mark the frame-side screw locations according to the hinge instructions. Keep the door supported while marking so it does not shift.
- Pilot-drill and mount the frame-side hardware. Drill only the holes and depths specified for the hinge and frame, then fasten the hinge or mounting plate as directed. The Home Depot installation guide demonstrates this approach for its particular 1/2-inch-overlay system; that overlay and its other dimensions are not universal.
- Check and adjust the door. Open and close the door, then use the hinge’s adjustment screws to correct its position. Blum describes side, height, and depth adjustment for its COMPACT range; consult the instructions for your exact model to identify each control and its adjustment sequence.
Align the door and troubleshoot fit
Make small adjustments, checking the door against the neighboring doors and frame after each change. Aim for even reveals—the visible gaps around the door—and confirm the door opens without rubbing or binding. If the available adjustment cannot correct the fit, recheck the selected overlay, mounting-plate or bracket position, and whether the door was held at the intended height during marking. Do not compensate by moving holes arbitrarily; use the hinge maker’s layout and adjustment guidance.

If the existing holes do not match the new hinge, verify that the replacement is intended for the same door position and mounting arrangement before reusing them. The correct repair or relocation depends on the hinge, frame, and door; the available guides do not establish one universal hole-repair method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why published dimensions do not transfer to every hinge
The Home Depot guide specifies a 35 mm cup hole and a 1/2-inch overlay for its own installation program. Those figures are examples for that system, not default dimensions for face-frame cabinets. Blum’s COMPACT examples also differ in opening angle and cup depth, illustrating that even hinges made for the same broad cabinet construction can require different layouts. The selected hinge’s current template and instructions—not a generic face-frame measurement—should govern every drilling and mounting decision.
