Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo tell hickory, ash, and walnut apart, first check how whole leaves attach to the twig: ash leaves are opposite in the cited guides, while hickory and walnut leaves are alternate. Then use leaflet count and shape as clues, and confirm with buds, bark, twigs, or fruit. These traits are most useful together; regional species and individual leaves vary.
First, make sure you are looking at a whole compound leaf
A pinnately compound leaf has several leaflets attached along a central stem called the rachis. The rachis is part of one leaf, not a twig. To find the base of the whole leaf, follow its stalk to where it meets the twig and look for a bud. The bud sits at the base of a whole leaf; individual leaflets do not have buds at their own bases. This distinction helps prevent mistaking one leaflet for a separate simple leaf. See the UF/IFAS tree-identification guide and the University of Kentucky Tree Identification guide.
When checking arrangement, compare whole leaves at twig nodes—not leaflet attachments along the rachis. Leaflets may appear in pairs along a rachis even when the whole leaves alternate on the twig.
Use leaf arrangement for the quickest distinction
| Group | Whole-leaf arrangement on twig | Leaflet clues in the cited regional guides | Useful confirmation traits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ash | Opposite in the cited guides | Purdue’s white ash example has 5–9 leaflets; its margins are untoothed or have rounded teeth. | Check buds and bark, and consult a guide for your region. |
| Hickory | Alternate | The hickories in Purdue’s key have 5–11 sharply toothed leaflets. Counts differ among its species examples. | Look at the nut husk, terminal bud, and bark. Shagbark hickory has shaggy bark and a large, ovate terminal bud in the Wisconsin guide. |
| Walnut | Alternate | Purdue’s black walnut example usually has 7–17 leaflets; the Tennessee guide describes walnut leaflet margins as serrated. | Use fruit and twig or bark features; do not assume every walnut species matches the black walnut example. |
The leaflet counts in this table are examples from Purdue University’s Ross Biological Reserve field key, a local key dated August 2006—not fixed cutoffs for every species or every leaf. The Tennessee guide’s description of hickory and walnut margins is in the University of Tennessee Extension Tree Identification Manual.

Compare hickory and walnut with more than leaflet count
Because both groups have alternate leaves in the cited guides, arrangement alone will not separate hickory from walnut. Leaflet counts and toothed margins can narrow the possibilities, but they overlap and vary. The Purdue key, for example, lists bitternut hickory with 7–11 leaflets, pignut with 5–7, and shagbark commonly with 5, while its black walnut example usually has 7–17.
Check the fruit and the twig or bark as well. The University of Tennessee Extension manual advises that leaves can help distinguish hickory and walnut from other trees, but identifying the particular hickory or walnut species is easier when fruit and twig and bark features are available. If a tree has no leaves, those other features can still provide useful clues.

Account for region and look-alikes
The cited keys are regional guides, not a universal key to every ash, hickory, or walnut species. The Purdue counts describe trees in the Ross Biological Reserve key; the Oregon State guide addresses ash in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California; the Wisconsin page covers Carya. Use a field guide or extension resource matched to your location, especially when you need a species-level identification.
Other compound-leaved trees can resemble these groups. Oregon State’s ash identification guide discusses alternate-leaved walnuts and other look-alikes. Combine twig arrangement with leaf, bud, bark, and fruit clues rather than relying on one feature.

A practical identification sequence
- Find the leaf base. Trace the stalk to the twig and look for its bud; this confirms the boundary of the whole leaf.
- Check whole leaves at the nodes. Opposite leaves point toward ash among these examples; alternate leaves fit hickory or walnut.
- Count leaflets and inspect their margins. Use these as supporting clues, not rigid rules, since both counts and margins vary.
- Look for confirmation. Examine buds, bark, twigs, and any fruit or nut husks, then compare the combination with a regional guide.
