The main challenge inside is providing enough light; careful watering and a plan for winter protection matter, too. In colder climates, a container olive often does better spending suitable warm months outdoors and moving to a frost-free place before cold weather arrives. Indoor fruit is possible only in the broadest sense—not something to count on.
Choose the right indoor setup
Think of indoor care as a compromise or a seasonal refuge, not the olive’s ideal growing environment. An Ask Extension response says olives grow best outdoors rather than as houseplants. If you can move a container tree between a sunny, sheltered outdoor spot in warm weather and a protected winter location, that is often a more practical approach than keeping it inside all year.
Before choosing a tree, consider whether you have a genuinely bright place for it and whether you can move its container. A large pot can become heavy, so container size, weight, and a clear route indoors are practical parts of the plan.
Give it the brightest light you can
Place the tree in the brightest available spot, such as a south-facing window where appropriate. Winter indoor light may be inadequate; supplemental grow lighting can help when natural light is limited. An Ask Extension expert responding to an indoor-tree question in 2020 suggested roughly 12 hours as a safe starting point, while noting that an exact number of hours could not be specified. That is an approximate suggestion, not a measured requirement or a universal schedule.

A timer can help keep supplemental light consistent. The cited advice does not establish a required wattage, distance from the canopy, or particular light model, so avoid treating any one setup as a guaranteed formula.
Select a pot and mix that drain freely
For container-grown olives, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends a thick, frost-proof pot at least 30–35 cm wide and deep, or large enough to accommodate the roots, with plenty of drainage holes. Its suggested medium is peat-free, soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3 mixed with about 20 percent horticultural grit by volume.

Good drainage is essential: saturated compost can leave roots without enough air. Keep drainage holes unobstructed and do not leave the pot standing in water. In colder areas, consider whether the container is both frost-proof and manageable to move between seasonal locations.
Water according to growth and soil condition
Watering needs change with the season, light, room temperature, pot size, and how quickly the mix dries. RHS guidance for container olives calls for regular watering during active growth, usually April through late September in its UK guidance. In winter, keep the compost barely moist rather than saturated. Extension advice similarly recommends letting soil dry somewhat between waterings and reducing watering once the tree is indoors.

Rather than following a fixed weekly schedule, check the growing medium and respond to its condition. Avoid prolonged saturation, but do not let the tree go neglected and completely dry for an extended period.
Plan the move indoors for winter
In colder regions, move a potted olive to a frost-free protected place before frost or prolonged cold. Local climate and cultivar matter, so use local conditions rather than a calendar date from another region. The RHS says many olives tolerate temperatures from -5 to -10°C in the UK, but severe frost can still damage leaves and branches; that regional guidance is not a guarantee for every cultivar, container, or climate.

A Minnesota-specific Ask Extension response from October 2025 offers a useful seasonal checklist for trees being brought inside:
- Inspect the tree for scale, spider mites, and aphids before moving it indoors.
- When feasible, transition it gradually, such as moving it from a porch to indoors.
- Place it in bright window light or supplement with a grow light.
- Reduce watering indoors and pause fertilizer until spring growth resumes.
For severe frosts, RHS also advises moving container trees undercover or to a sheltered position and protecting both the pot and canopy.

Feed lightly and prune with restraint
For a container tree, RHS recommends replacing about 5 cm of surface compost each spring. The Minnesota extension guidance advises holding fertilizer after the indoor move until spring growth resumes; the sources do not establish a universal year-round indoor feeding schedule.
Olives grow slowly and need little pruning. RHS recommends pruning in late spring or early summer: remove dead, diseased, or dying branches, and thin crowded growth to let light into the centre. A container tree may need summer pruning to manage its size. Avoid hard pruning, and do not prune after August under RHS guidance, so new growth has time to harden before frost.
Diagnose leaf drop before changing care
Some leaf loss is part of the seasonal cycle: RHS notes that older leaves naturally shed in spring as new growth begins. Dry conditions, particularly in containers, can also cause older leaves to fall. In one indoor case, an extension expert identified the change from nursery light and temperatures to home conditions as a likely contributor.
If leaves are dropping, check the light level, soil moisture and drainage, recent moves between locations, and whether the timing coincides with spring growth. Also look for pests: RHS lists scale insects among olive problems, and the Minnesota extension advice recommends checking for scale, spider mites, and aphids before bringing a tree indoors.

Indoor fruiting should not be the reason to choose an olive for a houseplant. RHS reports that olives rarely produce fruit in the UK, and fruit requires special preparation to become edible. The cited guidance does not establish a reliable indoor chill or fruiting protocol, so treat fruit as an uncertain bonus rather than an expected harvest.
