After a Christmas cactus finishes flowering, water it a little less and give it a cooler resting spot. As new growth appears, return to regular care: bright, indirect light and watering guided by how dry the soil is. For the next flowering cycle, short days and suitable temperatures matter; steady conditions help protect developing buds. These steps support healthy growth and flowering, but cannot guarantee bigger blooms.
First, check which holiday cactus you have
Plants sold as “holiday cactus” may be Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera × buckleyi and related usage), or Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri). Illinois Extension distinguishes these types, which do not necessarily flower on the same schedule. Identify the plant before relying on a particular bloom date: Illinois Extension’s holiday cactus guide.
What to do just after flowering
Once the flowers fade, gently remove spent blooms if you wish. Move the plant to a cooler location and water less often while it rests. “Less often” does not mean leaving the root zone bone-dry for a prolonged period: avoid keeping the medium continuously wet, but do not impose severe drought. Iowa State Extension recommends a cooler post-flowering rest and reduced watering for holiday cacti: Iowa State’s Christmas cactus guidance.
When new growth appears, resume ordinary care. Let the growing medium dry slightly between waterings, and use its condition—not a fixed weekly calendar—to decide when to water.

Care during active growth
Give bright, indirect light
Place the cactus where it receives bright light without harsh, direct sun. Keep its location reasonably consistent; abrupt shifts in light can be a problem, especially once buds begin forming.
Water to the soil, not the calendar
Check the medium before watering. Florida IFAS advises watering when the upper inch of soil feels dry, while Illinois Extension recommends allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. These are practical cues, not a promise that every pot will need water at the same interval. A home’s temperature, pot, growing medium, and season all affect how quickly soil dries. Water thoroughly when needed, then let excess water drain.

Make drainage fit the actual problem
A freely draining growing medium and a container that does not leave roots sitting in excess water support healthy roots. If the current soil stays wet or the container has no way to drain, consider an appropriate potting mix or a pot with a drainage hole. Repotting or buying a new pot is not automatically necessary when the existing setup drains well. See Florida IFAS’s Christmas cactus care recommendations.
Set up fall conditions for the next flowering cycle
Holiday cactus flowering responds to seasonal day length and temperature. Minnesota Extension says Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti flower after approximately six weeks of short days; Iowa State also identifies day length and temperature as key factors in flowering. This is a timing recommendation, not a guaranteed bloom date or a guarantee of larger flowers.

During the fall dark period, keep the plant away from artificial light at night if you want to support flowering. A naturally dark room can help avoid interrupting the short-day cue. Do not assume that simply increasing water or fertilizer will compensate for unsuitable seasonal light and temperature. Guidance: Minnesota Extension’s holiday cactus guide and Iowa State Extension.
Keep conditions steady while buds form
Once buds appear, avoid moving the plant suddenly or placing it near drafts or heat sources. North Carolina State Extension identifies sudden temperature changes, drafts, low humidity, and improper watering as factors associated with bud drop. Keep watering responsive to soil dryness and avoid abrupt changes in light or temperature: NC State Extension’s Schlumbergera profile.

If your Christmas cactus does not bloom well
Check the fall flowering cues first, then review the plant’s everyday conditions. Iowa State Extension frames poor blooming as a question of both day length and temperature, while Minnesota Extension describes the short-day period for Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti. These are useful places to start, not a single diagnosis that explains every plant.
- Was it lit at night? Artificial light during the fall dark period can interfere with the short-day cue.
- Did it get seasonal conditions? Consider whether it experienced short days and suitable temperatures before the expected flowering period.
- Does the soil drain and dry appropriately? Check for a persistently wet medium, and water according to soil dryness rather than a rigid schedule.
- Was it exposed to a draft or sudden change? Look for a nearby door, window, heater, or recent move, particularly if buds dropped.
If the plant is actually a Thanksgiving or Easter cactus, its flowering season may differ from that of a Christmas cactus. Illinois Extension’s identification guide can help distinguish the types.
