Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) grows best with bright light, a free-draining growing medium and careful watering. It is a cycad, not a true palm, and grows very slowly. It can be kept indoors in a bright spot or outdoors where local winter conditions allow—but every part is highly toxic to people and animals, so placement and access matter as much as routine care.
Choose an indoor or outdoor position
For an indoor plant, choose a bright location near a window. North Carolina State University Extension recommends 4–6 hours of filtered sunlight daily. Outdoors, sago palm can grow in full sun or partial shade, but harsh sun may scorch or bleach foliage, particularly after a plant has been kept in lower light. Move it into stronger light gradually.
It is evergreen and exceptionally slow-growing: NC State says it may take 50 or more years to reach 10 feet. Do not mistake the absence of rapid trunk growth for a care problem.
Use a pot and soil that drain freely
Whether grown in a container or in the ground, avoid conditions that leave the roots sitting in water. Use a pot with open drainage holes and a porous medium. For glasshouse or container culture, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends peat-free, loam-based compost amended with leaf mould and grit. Sandy loam is also suitable; sago palm tolerates a range of soils, but poor drainage raises the risk of root rot.

Water according to growth and drying
Water moderately during active growth and more sparingly at other times. Let the growing medium begin to dry between waterings rather than keeping it persistently wet. There is no reliable universal weekly schedule: a plant in a warm, bright spot or a small pot may dry faster than one in cooler, lower-light conditions or a larger container. Established outdoor plants can tolerate some drought.
Protect it from frost
Cold tolerance guidance depends on the region and system being used. University of Florida IFAS describes sago palm as suited to USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8–11 and notes that frost can damage its foliage. NC State states that it will not survive below 15°F. The RHS gives it an H3 rating for UK growing conditions. These are regional guides, not a guarantee for every site or plant. If yours is in a container, move it to a sheltered, frost-protected place before freezing weather.

Prune only when needed; expect slow propagation
Routine pruning is generally unnecessary. Remove dead fronds when needed, taking care not to damage healthy foliage. Sago palm can be propagated from seed or from basal suckers, also called offsets. The cited horticultural guidance does not establish a dependable step-by-step method or timeline, so do not expect a quick result. Growth and establishment are slow.
Check symptoms before treating pests or nutrient problems
Scale insects, mealybugs and spider mites can affect sago palms. Root rot is associated with overwatering or poorly drained soil, so check the growing medium and drainage if the plant declines. Some symptoms may also be associated with manganese deficiency or alkaline soil that limits manganese availability. That possibility is not proof that every plant needs fertilizer; identify the likely cause before choosing a treatment. The cited guidance does not establish a specific pesticide or treatment protocol.

Keep the plant and its fallen parts away from people and pets
Every part of sago palm is toxic to humans and animals. UF/IFAS identifies cycasin among its toxins and says seeds contain the highest concentration. ASPCA lists the plant as toxic to dogs, cats and horses; possible signs in animals include vomiting, bloody stool, jaundice, bruising, blood-clotting problems, liver damage or failure, and death. People may also become ill after ingestion.
Keep seeds, fallen leaves and other plant material inaccessible to children and pets. If a pet may have eaten any part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 as soon as possible. Do not wait for symptoms or try home remedies.
