To grow a rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) successfully, choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with moist, well-drained soil, allow for its mature size, and keep the root flare level with the soil when planting. Water during dry spells while the tree establishes, especially through its first two years. Rowan usually needs little routine pruning.

Choose a site with room for the mature tree

Check the tree’s mature height and spread before deciding where it will go. In a UK agroforestry guide published by Forest Research and the University of Reading in March 2024, rowan is described as typically reaching up to 15 m, exceptionally 22 m, with a canopy 4–8 m wide. The guide gives 20–50 years as the time to reach maximum height; these are long-term species figures, not a forecast for a particular backyard.

Cultivars can differ considerably in shape and size. The Royal Horticultural Society’s profile for ‘Fastigiata’ describes a narrowly conical tree growing up to 6 m tall. For a smaller garden, compare the mature dimensions and form of named cultivars, and confirm the expected size of the tree you are buying with the nursery.

Check light and soil

Choose full sun or light, dappled shade. Rowan does best in soil that holds some moisture but drains freely. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged or is heavily compacted. The 2024 Forest Research and University of Reading guide describes rowan as sensitive to waterlogging and moderately sensitive to drought, so a newly planted tree may need extra water in dry weather.

When and how to plant

The RHS recommends planting trees from autumn to early spring, provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Container-grown trees can be planted at other times, but avoid hot or dry conditions. The planting guidance below follows the RHS’s general advice for trees and shrubs.

  1. Prepare the ground. Loosen the soil around the planting area. Dig a hole no deeper than the roots and, ideally, at least three times the diameter of the root system.
  2. Set the tree at the right height. Spread the roots into the hole and position the root flare—the point where the trunk widens into the roots—at the level of the finished soil surface. Do not bury the trunk base.
  3. Backfill and firm gently. Return soil around the roots, working it into gaps without compacting it hard. Water thoroughly to settle the soil.
  4. Add support only if needed. Stake a large or top-heavy specimen if it needs support. Use a guard if browsing animals pose a risk.

Do not add fertilizer to the planting hole. See the RHS guides to planting trees and shrubs and growing trees for general planting and aftercare guidance.

Care for the tree as it establishes

Water through dry spells

Water thoroughly when the weather is dry, particularly during the first two years after planting. How often it needs water depends on local rainfall, soil and the tree’s condition; check the soil rather than following a fixed schedule. Rowan is not immune to drought stress, especially while its roots are getting established.

Keep the base clear and mulch carefully

Remove competing grass and weeds around the tree, since they compete with a young tree for water and nutrients. Apply mulch over the soil surface to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it clear of the trunk. Avoid piling soil or mulch against the root flare.

Pruning and wildlife

Rowan generally needs little routine pruning. The RHS places the rowan profiles cited here in pruning group 1; its profile for ‘Fastigiata’ says pruning is usually unnecessary. Focus on corrective cuts where needed rather than regularly hard-pruning the tree.

Rowan flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinating insects, while the berries are autumn food for birds, including thrushes and waxwings, according to the Woodland Trust. The RHS cautions that fruit on its cited ornamental cultivar should not be eaten. Do not assume berries are edible based on their appearance or on gardening advice.

Sources and regional context

The height, spread and establishment-time figures above come from the UK-focused Tree Species Guide for UK Agroforestry Systems, published by Forest Research and the University of Reading in March 2024. RHS cultivation profiles and planting guidance are UK-oriented, and local climate and cultivar can affect how well the advice applies elsewhere. Forestry England also provides a rowan species page.
