Ficus Audrey is Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’, a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree often grown as a houseplant. Give it bright, filtered light, a well-drained potting medium, and water when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil have dried. Avoid leaving its roots in standing water, and protect it from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes.

What is Ficus Audrey?

Ficus Audrey is a cultivar of Ficus benghalensis. Its leathery, oval-to-oblong leaves emerge bright green and mature to deeper green with paler veins. The plant is also described as having a smooth trunk and stems, and can grow into a shrub or small tree. NC State Extension profiles it as a popular houseplant, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) categorizes it as a tropical evergreen usually grown under glass or as a houseplant.

Published size guidance differs substantially: NC State Extension lists 1 to 2 feet tall for the cultivar, while the RHS gives a maximum height of 1.5–2.5 metres. These are profile specifications, not a guaranteed indoor size. The plant’s eventual height depends on growing conditions, pot size, and pruning.

How much light does Ficus Audrey need?

Choose a bright indoor spot with filtered or indirect light. NC State Extension specifically recommends bright, indirect sunlight for indoor plants. The RHS says to grow it under glass in full or filtered light; that broader guidance should not be taken as a universal recommendation for exposing an indoor plant to unfiltered sun.

When and how should you water it?

Check the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Water when the top 2 to 3 inches feel dry, the cue given by NC State Extension. Then water thoroughly and empty the saucer so the pot does not sit in runoff. A well-drained medium and removal of standing water help reduce the risk of root rot from overwatering.

The RHS advises moderate watering during active growth and keeping the medium moist over winter. Because that seasonal advice differs in emphasis from NC State Extension’s soil-dryness cue, use the plant and its potting medium as your guide: check moisture before watering, and do not let the roots remain waterlogged.

What soil, temperature, and humidity are suitable?

Potting medium

Use a well-drained potting medium. NC State Extension recommends a good-quality potting mix with perlite; the RHS specifies peat-free, loam-based compost with bark chippings. These are alternative institutional recommendations, not one required recipe.

Temperature and humidity

NC State Extension gives a temperature range of 65–80°F and humidity of 50–80% for its care guidance, and recommends protection from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. The RHS lists 15°C as the minimum under glass. Treat these figures as published growing guidance, not a guarantee that a plant will thrive at every point in the ranges.

How do you feed, prune, and propagate Ficus Audrey?

Feeding

NC State Extension recommends liquid fertilizer during the growing season, from spring through summer. Its guidance does not specify a product, concentration, or application schedule, so follow the directions for any fertilizer you choose rather than assuming a particular dosage.

Pruning

Pruning is not usually required, according to the RHS. If you do prune or handle the plant, wear gloves: its sap may irritate skin.

How can you spot and address common problems?

Inspect leaves, stems, and the soil regularly. The RHS lists red spider mite, thrips, mealybugs, and scale among pests affecting plants grown under glass; NC State Extension also calls out spider mites and fungus gnats.

  • Root rot: NC State Extension associates it with overwatering. Check how often you water, confirm that the medium drains, and empty water from the saucer.
  • Leaf spots: Excess moisture combined with poor air circulation can contribute to leaf spot, according to NC State Extension.
  • Dry, light-brown spots: NC State Extension links these to underwatering. Check the soil before watering and use the dryness of the upper 2 to 3 inches as your cue.
  • Cracked leaves: Low humidity is associated with cracking in NC State Extension’s guidance.
  • Yellow leaves or leaf drop: These symptoms alone do not establish a specific cause in the cited care profile. Check soil moisture and drainage, consider any recent changes in conditions, and inspect for pests rather than assuming a diagnosis.

Is Ficus Audrey safe around children and pets?

Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets because it is toxic if ingested. NC State Extension lists decreased appetite, drooling, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea among possible effects of ingestion. Its sap may irritate skin, and the RHS identifies the cultivar as a skin allergen. Wear gloves when pruning or handling it.
