Check the soil before watering instead of following a fixed calendar, and keep the plant where pets cannot chew it: peace lilies are toxic to cats and dogs.
Choose a suitable place and light
Peace lilies are tropical members of the arum family, grown indoors for their leafy foliage and distinctive flowers: a pale spathe surrounding a central spadix. Many indoor plants reach about 1 to 4 feet tall and wide, depending on variety and growing conditions. North Carolina Cooperative Extension and Clemson Cooperative Extension describe their size and growing needs.
Bright, indirect light is a good starting point. A spot near a bright window out of direct sun supports growth and flowering; direct sunlight can scorch leaves. Peace lilies tolerate lower light, but that does not mean they will flower reliably there. Clemson notes that a plant under a year old or one receiving insufficient light commonly does not flower.
How often should you water a peace lily?
There is no universal number of days between waterings. The right interval depends on the room, pot, and potting mix, so use soil moisture as your guide. Keep the mix moist but not soggy, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let the excess drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water in its saucer. This approach follows guidance from Clemson Cooperative Extension and North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Potting mix, repotting, and fertilizer
Potting mix and repotting
Choose a well-drained houseplant mix with plenty of organic matter. The University of Florida IFAS recommends a rich, peat- or bark-based bagged mix. Repot when the plant needs it; North Carolina Extension mentions February or March, but that timing is specific to its guidance and is not a universal calendar rule.

Feed lightly
Peace lilies need restrained feeding, not heavy or frequent doses. Follow the fertilizer label and err on the side of a light application. Recommendations differ: UF/IFAS advises low-dose liquid fertilizer according to product instructions three times yearly, while North Carolina Extension recommends one-quarter label strength. Both caution against overfertilizing. Excess fertilizer and salt buildup can burn roots and leaf tips.
Troubleshoot common peace lily problems
- Drooping or wilting: Check whether the potting mix has become too dry. Clemson notes that excessive drying can cause wilting and yellowing. Water thoroughly if the mix is dry, then allow it to drain.
- Persistently wet soil or root concerns: Check for water left in the saucer and make sure the pot drains freely. Avoid keeping the mix saturated.
- Brown leaf tips: Review how much fertilizer you use and whether salts may be building up in the mix; overfertilizing can injure roots and leaf tips.
- No flowers: Consider the plant’s age and light. A young plant or one in insufficient light may not flower; moving it to bright, indirect light can improve the conditions, but does not guarantee immediate blooms.
- Dust or pests: Wipe broad leaves with a damp cloth. North Carolina Extension identifies mealybugs as a common indoor pest.
Are peace lilies toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists Spathiphyllum as toxic to cats and dogs because it contains insoluble calcium oxalates. Chewing or ingesting it can cause oral irritation, intense burning in the mouth, tongue, and lips, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The ASPCA advises contacting its Poison Control service or a local veterinarian if ingestion is suspected. Keep the plant somewhere pets cannot reach or chew it.
