To get rid of pantry weevils, find and discard the infested dry food, then empty, vacuum and wash the storage area. Check nearby grains and other stored plant foods as well as the package where you first saw insects. After cleaning, keep remaining dry goods in sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids.
1. Find the source
Weevils and other pantry pests may be developing inside stored food, so the insects on a shelf may not be the only sign. Inspect grains, rice, flour, cereal, pasta, pet food, birdseed and other stored plant materials. Check nearby packages, not just the one where you first spotted a beetle. 2. Discard infested food
Throw away products that are visibly infested. Inspect adjacent goods and remove any other infested items; the presence of bugs in one package does not by itself mean every unopened package must be discarded. Removing the food source matters: killing beetles visible on the shelf alone will not address insects developing inside a product.
3. Empty the affected cupboard
Take out the food and storage containers so you can reach the shelves, corners and seams. A clear area makes it easier to spot crumbs and insects that might otherwise remain behind. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s cupboard-cleaning guidance also recommends emptying the storage area before cleaning.

4. Vacuum shelves, corners and cracks
Use a household vacuum to remove insects, crumbs and debris from shelves, joints and cracks. Empty the vacuum canister or dispose of its bag promptly after cleaning so captured pests are not left in the vacuum. University of Minnesota Extension advises vacuuming pantry areas as part of control: Pantry pests: Insects found in stored food.
5. Wash the storage surfaces
Wash cupboard shelves with warm, soapy water and clean up food spills. Let the area dry before putting food back. You do not need a pesticide spray for this cleanup; removing food and debris and washing surfaces are the supported first-line actions.

6. Store dry goods to reduce a repeat
Transfer remaining dry goods to sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids, and keep shelves free of spills and crumbs. Pantry pests may get through paper, cardboard and thin plastic packaging, so those packages are not dependable barriers. Choose containers for their secure lids and sturdy construction rather than a particular brand. Illinois Extension discusses storage and prevention in its pantry pest guidance.
Should you use bay leaves or pesticide spray?
Bay leaves are not an established way to prevent or eliminate pantry pests. University of Minnesota Extension says, “There is no evidence that placing bay leaves or sticks of spearmint gum in a cupboard will prevent or get rid of stored food insect pests.”

Avoid spraying pesticides on or near food as a casual fix. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources cautions that “Spraying pesticides on or near food may cause greater harm to you and your family than would pantry pests.” Prioritize removing infested products and cleaning the cupboard instead. “Weevil” can describe different insects. If you are finding beetles on walls or near doors rather than in stored food, pantry cleanup may not address the source. University of Nevada, Reno Extension says indoor home-invading weevils can generally be swept or vacuumed up, and pesticides are generally unnecessary for indoor weevils that do not damage the home.
