To fix a squeaky floor, first locate the moving joint or layer, then choose a repair that suits the floor covering and your access. A squeak may come from loose fasteners, a gap between the subfloor and a joist, or boards rubbing together; it does not by itself prove a structural problem. Mark the noisy spot and, if possible, have someone recreate the sound while you inspect the floor from below.
How do I find the cause of a squeaky floor?
Floor assemblies have several layers and contact points, so the same sound can have different causes. Weyerhaeuser’s May 2025 technical sheet discusses movement in floor panels, fasteners, joist depth or straightness, and contact with other parts of the floor system. Retail repair guides also identify loose fasteners and boards rubbing together. Treat a loose subfloor as one possible cause—not the diagnosis for every squeak.
- Walk slowly over the area and mark each spot that squeaks.
- If you can reach the underside, ask a helper to step on the marked area while you watch and listen below.
- Look for a visible gap between the subfloor and joist, a panel or fastener that moves, or a nail rubbing against another surface.
- Identify the framing and the layer that is moving before fastening anything. Do not guess at screw length: a screw that is too long can break through the finished floor.
For technical background on floor-system movement, see Weyerhaeuser’s Prevention and Repair of Floor System Squeaks. Practical diagnostic guidance is also available from The Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Which repair fits the floor and access?
| Situation | Possible approach | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accessible underside; small, visible subfloor-to-joist gap | Ease a lightly adhesive-coated wood shim into the gap | Fit it snugly without force; a shim driven too far can lift the floor above. |
| Accessible underside; loose connection rather than an open gap | Secure the assembly with an appropriately placed screw or adhesive | Confirm what is moving and locate the framing before fastening. |
| Hardwood; repair from above | Use a suitable flooring screw, then fill the hole | Locate the joist, measure the floor layers, and pre-drill as appropriate. A filled hole or finish difference may remain. |
| Carpet; loose floor-to-joist connection | Use a specialty breakaway-screw kit as directed | Verify the joist location; the kit is designed to leave the screw head below the carpet surface. |
| Minor friction between hardwood boards | Try powdered lubricant, such as graphite, as a limited first measure | This may reduce board-to-board friction but will not repair a gap or loose subfloor connection. |
Repair a gap from below
If inspection shows a small gap between the subfloor and a joist, put a small amount of construction adhesive on a wood shim and ease it into the opening. The shim should fit snugly. Do not force it: stop if it begins to lift the floor above. If several boards move, a single shim may not address the wider problem; The Home Depot guide discusses cleats or bridging for some cases.

Fix squeaky hardwood from above
A screw can secure loose hardwood to the structure below when it is placed correctly. The Lowe’s guide describes pilot drilling, countersinking, and filling the hole; The Home Depot guide discusses a pilot hole and trim screws. First identify the joist and measure the assembly so the screw does not break through the finished floor. Expect a small filled hole or possible difference in finish.

Fix a squeak under carpet with a breakaway-screw kit
A specialty kit can pull the subfloor toward a joist without leaving a screw head above the carpet. In the method described by This Old House, you locate the joist with a pilot screw, position the depth-control fixture, drive a scored screw through the carpet and subfloor into the joist, then snap off the head below carpet level. Follow the kit directions and verify the joist location before driving the screw.

What to weigh before choosing a repair
- Access: Determine whether you can inspect and work from below or need an above-floor method.
- Floor covering: Hardwood can be repaired with a filled fastener hole; carpet may suit a breakaway-screw kit. The method must fit the actual floor assembly.
- Cause: Board friction, a visible gap, and a loose connection are different problems and may need different repairs.
- Appearance: Above-floor screws can leave a hole or finish variation; an underside repair avoids altering the visible finish.
- Scope and condition: A single localized squeak is different from widespread noise or flooring that is soft, uneven, or water-damaged.
