If your dryer won’t start, first check whether it has power, whether Control Lock is on, whether you’re using the correct Start-button action, and whether the door is fully latched. These external checks can solve simple start problems; if they do not, the symptom alone cannot identify which internal part has failed.
1. Check whether the dryer has power
Look at the display and, if your model has one, the drum light. If both are dark, make sure the dryer is plugged in and check the accessible household breaker or fuse. Do not remove an electrical panel or handle wiring as part of these checks.
For U.S. electric dryers, Whirlpool says the appliance requires a 240-volt supply and may use two household fuses or circuit breakers. If an accessible breaker or fuse check does not restore power, contact an electrician. These electrical details are U.S. guidance; follow local requirements elsewhere. If the controls light up, the dryer has at least some power. Continue with the lock, Start-button, and door checks rather than treating it as a total power failure. LG separates “No Power” from “Powers On, Won’t Run” in its dryer power troubleshooting guide.

2. Check Control Lock or Child Lock
If the controls do not respond, check the display for a Control Lock or Child Lock indicator. The button or reset sequence varies by model, so check the owner’s manual for your dryer. LG says most of its models can disable Child Lock by holding the Child Lock button for three seconds; do not assume that timing applies to other brands or models. 3. Press Start the way your model requires
Some dryers need Start to be held down rather than tapped. Whirlpool says its Start, Push to Start, or Hold to Start buttons should be held for two to five seconds. Follow the wording on your control panel and the instructions for your model; that timing is Whirlpool guidance, not a universal rule. 4. Make sure the door is closed and latched
Open and close the door, checking that clothing is not caught between the door and frame or obstructing the latch. A door can appear closed without engaging the latch, and some models have more than one latch. If the dryer does not detect a closed door, it may refuse to start.
If the latch or switch looks damaged, stop and arrange service instead of trying to defeat the safety interlock. A faulty door switch is one possible cause, but a no-start symptom by itself does not confirm that it has failed. 5. Select a cycle that can run
Choose a cycle intended to operate the dryer, such as an automatic or timed dry cycle if your model offers one. Some settings or options can pause or prevent a normal start. Cycle behavior and control labels vary, so use your owner’s manual to confirm the correct selection. Whirlpool’s dryer no-start guidance also points owners to the door, cycle, and control-lock checks.

If the dryer still will not run after the external checks, do not replace a part based only on the symptom. A door switch, thermal protection component, motor, control, wiring, or another model-specific issue may be involved; diagnosis may require trained service. GE Appliances Factory Service notes several possible internal causes, including thermal overload protection and overheating related to ventilation. Do not bypass a thermal fuse or replace one without addressing the cause of the fault.

For a confirmed failed door switch, use a manufacturer-approved replacement matched to the exact dryer model. There is no universal switch or part number established for all dryers. Leave internal electrical diagnosis and repair to qualified appliance service; persistent household power problems should be handled by an electrician.
