Samsung code 33E means “Ice Pipe Heater Error.” It indicates a problem in the heater circuit that keeps the ice-maker fill pipe from freezing. You can run the model-appropriate ice-maker test and perform limited visual checks, but a code that returns usually needs diagnosis of the heater, wiring, connector, ice-maker assembly, or control circuit. A reset can clear a temporary indication; it cannot repair an open heater or damaged harness.
Quick answer
- Meaning: 33E is an ice-pipe-heater fault. Some models or regional documents use 33C for a related designation.
- First step: Record the complete refrigerator model number, including its suffix, then use the correct ice-maker test for that design.
- Do not: Repeatedly press Test, force frozen parts, or assume a disappearing code means the heater is repaired.
- Request service when: 33E returns, the ice maker fails its test, wiring is inaccessible or damaged, or electrical testing is required.
What 33E and 33C mean
Samsung defines 33E as an Ice Pipe Heater Error. The heater is part of the ice-making system and helps stop the water pipe that fills the ice maker from freezing. This is not a fault in the refrigerator’s main cooling circuit, although a refrigerator can have more than one problem at once.
Some regional or model-specific Samsung material displays 33C instead. Do not confuse either code with other ice-system codes: 39E/39C identifies an ice-maker function error, 40E/40C identifies an ice-room fan error, and 8E and 14E are ice-maker sensor-related codes. See Samsung’s error-code guidance for the model-specific interpretation: Samsung refrigerator error codes.
Record the model before touching the ice maker
Find the full model code on the refrigerator label or in its settings and write down the suffix, such as /AA. Ice-maker position, test-button location, heater construction, wiring and replacement parts vary by model. Samsung’s refrigerator support portal lets you search by that complete code for manuals, warranty information and repair options.

Safe checks before resetting
Seat the ice bucket correctly
Remove and reinstall the bucket according to the design. It should click fully into place. On some models, a rear gear or helix must be turned about 90 degrees if the bucket will not reseat. Samsung’s illustrated guidance is at ice-bucket troubleshooting.
Look for blockage without forcing anything
Inspect the fill area and tray for obvious ice. Never chip at ice with a knife or screwdriver, force the tray, or use an open flame or heat gun. Stop if plastic, wiring or tubing could be damaged.
Check cooling and accessible water supply
Confirm the refrigerator is maintaining normal temperatures. If food is warming, leaking water or the appliance is sparking, treat that as a broader appliance fault rather than an isolated ice-code problem. Where accessible, make sure the household shutoff valve is open and the external tubing is not kinked or leaking. Samsung uses 20 psi as a minimum pressure in an applicable ice-maker troubleshooting path; that threshold does not prove low pressure caused 33E. See Samsung ice-maker troubleshooting.

Reset and test the ice maker by location
This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed 33E repair. Locate the rectangular Test button, usually near the front, side or underside of the ice maker. Remove the bucket or cover only as your model instructions direct, press and hold Test until the unit chimes or begins moving, then reinstall the bucket securely.
| Ice-maker design | Where to find the test procedure | Typical test timing |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator compartment or side-by-side freezer | Samsung refrigerator/side-by-side instructions; button is generally on the right side | About six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker |
| Ice maker in a freezer door | Samsung freezer-door instructions; commonly lower-left or front-left | About 30 seconds for a freezer ice maker |
| Bottom freezer | Samsung bottom-freezer instructions; generally at the front underside | Model dependent |
| Top freezer | Samsung top-freezer instructions; remove the bucket to reach the switch | Model dependent |
| Separate Cubed Ice and Ice Bites makers | Samsung dual-ice-maker instructions; test each maker separately | Model dependent |
A single chime and normal movement generally mean the ice maker completed its test; they do not prove the heater works under load. Multiple chimes or no response indicate that service may be needed. Do not repeatedly test a tray containing water or ice: Samsung warns of overflow and jams, and one guide recommends no more than one test per day. Samsung also generally says not to unplug a refrigerator merely to erase an error.
If the test button produces no response
- Turn the refrigerator off at the circuit breaker or unplug it for two minutes.
- Restore power and run the test once more.
- If there is still no chime or movement, request service rather than repeating the cycle.
This two-minute power cycle is the exception described in Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting when the test does not respond; it is not a universal way to repair 33E.

What it means if 33E returns
A recurring code points to an unresolved fault rather than a software glitch. Samsung model-specific material identifies an open ice-pipe heater or a loose or defective wire connector as possibilities. Other diagnostic possibilities include a persistently frozen pipe, an ice-maker assembly fault, a sensor or control problem, or a water-supply issue that is affecting ice production without being the heater fault itself.
| Situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Code appeared once after a power disturbance and stays away after testing | Monitor ice production and record the original code in case it returns. |
| Code returns immediately | Arrange diagnosis of the heater circuit, connector and harness. |
| Ice maker does not chime or move | Use the two-minute power-cycle fallback once, then request service if unchanged. |
| Fill pipe is visibly frozen | Use only a controlled, model-appropriate defrost; investigate recurrence. |
| Heater circuit measures open | Repair or replace the correct heater or assembly after model verification. |
| Heater measures normally | Have the connector, harness, sensors, control circuit and mechanical blockage checked. |
Defrosting: when it may help
A frozen pipe can temporarily stop water from reaching the ice maker. Defrosting may restore production, but it does not repair an open heater, damaged wiring or a control fault. Exact procedures depend on the refrigerator. One model-specific Samsung result describes emptying the freezer, unplugging the unit, leaving the freezer door open and allowing roughly five hours; that is not a universal 33E instruction. Follow your model’s service documentation at Samsung’s model-specific guidance.

Electrical diagnosis for experienced users or technicians
Only test resistance with the refrigerator disconnected from power and only if you are comfortable accessing appliance wiring. Samsung material for model RF32FMQDBSR/AA associates 33E/33C with an open heater or bad connector and gives an approximate heater resistance of 62 ohms: Samsung model-specific heater diagnosis. That is not a universal specification. Use the value in your own service manual.
| Meter result | Possible implication |
|---|---|
| Open or infinite resistance | Failed heater, broken wire, disconnected connector or another break in the circuit |
| Near the model’s specified resistance | Heater may be electrically intact; inspect connectors, harness, controls and blockage |
| Unusually low resistance | Possible shorted heater or incorrect test points |
| Intermittent reading | Loose connector, damaged harness, corrosion or a movement-related fault |
A normal resistance reading does not prove the heater operates under load or that the control board is working. Do not dismantle a door-mounted or sealed ice system based on the code alone.

Match every part to the complete model number
Do not order an ice maker solely because 33E is displayed. Depending on the model, the heater may be separate, integrated into an assembly, or affected by a harness or control fault. If diagnosis confirms a part, compare the exact model and suffix against the listing at Samsung ice-maker parts or Samsung refrigerator parts. An alternative storefront lists compatible parts at Samsung Parts USA, including example part DA61-03352B; verify seller identity, returns, warranty and compatibility before buying.
Verify warranty terms instead of assuming coverage
Samsung has published a two-year ice-maker warranty for specified models and purchase conditions, including a limited warranty document and a Bespoke ice-maker addendum. Coverage depends on model, country, purchase date, failure type and whether parts, labor or only the assembly are included. Have the model number, serial number and proof of purchase ready, and ask whether unauthorized repairs could affect coverage.
What to tell Samsung or a technician
- Complete model and serial numbers, including the suffix
- The exact code and when it first appeared
- Whether a reset produced a chime or movement
- Whether the bucket, fill pipe or tray was frozen
- Whether 33E returned after testing or defrosting
- Any water-supply, temperature, leak or additional-code symptoms
- Any resistance measurement, including the test points and the model specification used
Frequently Asked Questions
Will unplugging clear 33E?
A two-minute power cycle is appropriate when the ice-maker Test button produces no response, followed by one more test. Samsung does not recommend unplugging solely to make an error display disappear, and a recurring 33E still requires diagnosis.
Is 33E dangerous, and can I keep using the refrigerator?
The code concerns the ice-making system, but stop using the appliance and seek prompt service for sparking, overheating, leaks or unsafe food temperatures. If cooling is normal and there are no hazards, the refrigerator may continue cooling while the ice system is addressed.
Does 33E mean the entire ice maker must be replaced?
No. An open heater, connector or harness can produce the code, and some models may use a separate or integrated heater. Confirm the complete model and diagnosis before ordering an assembly.
Is approximately 62 ohms correct for every Samsung refrigerator?
No. Samsung gives approximately 62 ohms in documentation associated with model RF32FMQDBSR/AA. Use the resistance specification for your own model.
