For everyday fingerprints and light grime, clean stainless steel with a soft microfiber cloth dampened with warm water. Wipe in the direction of the visible grain, then dry the surface thoroughly with a second clean, soft cloth. Before trying anything stronger, check the care instructions for the appliance or surface: cleaning advice can vary by finish.
Start by identifying the finish
Stainless steel may be traditional brushed steel, fingerprint-resistant, black stainless, or another specialty finish. The right cleaning method can differ. Check the appliance’s Use and Care Guide if you know the model; Maytag advises checking the guide before cleaning and notes that products suitable for one finish may harm another. Its stainless-steel care guidance also cautions against assuming that vinegar-based cleaners or other products are safe for every finish.
This method is intended for ordinary household grime on appliance surfaces. It does not establish what is safe for industrial, food-service, or specialty-coated steel.
Clean fingerprints and everyday soil with water
- Dampen a soft cloth. Use a clean microfiber or other soft cloth with warm water, not a dripping-wet cloth. Whirlpool recommends this approach for ordinary food and water deposits in its stainless-steel cleaning guidance.
- Wipe with the grain. Follow the visible lines in the steel rather than scrubbing across them. Use light, even pressure.
- Dry the surface. Wipe with a second clean, dry soft cloth. Maytag notes that water left on stainless steel can cause discoloration; drying also helps prevent water marks.
A washable stainless-steel cloth is optional: 3M says its Scotch-Brite stainless steel cloth removes fingerprints and smudges without chemicals or water. That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not an independent comparison or test; an ordinary soft cloth and water are sufficient for the basic method.

For selected stubborn marks, consider baking soda cautiously
If water alone does not remove a mark, first confirm that the care guide for your finish permits baking soda. Whirlpool describes a baking soda and warm water paste for some brown stains or discoloration, while GE Appliances describes it for some stains or surface rust. Neither recommendation makes it suitable for every stainless-steel finish.
- Mix baking soda with enough water to make a soft paste.
- Apply it to a soft cloth and use gentle pressure, wiping with the grain. Do not scrub aggressively.
- Whirlpool’s guidance for its described stain method says to let the paste sit for two to three minutes; treat that timing as specific to that method, not a universal instruction for every finish.
- Wipe or rinse away all residue with clean water, then dry the surface completely with a soft cloth.

What not to use
- Steel wool or steel brushes: GE Appliances warns that particles can remain on the surface and begin to rust; Whirlpool also cautions against these tools.
- Bleach or ammonia: Whirlpool lists these among products to avoid on appliance surfaces, and GE Appliances warns against cleaners containing ammonia.
- Vinegar, polish, abrasives, or homemade mixtures without checking first: maker advice differs, and some finishes may be damaged. Do not treat a remedy recommended for one appliance as safe for another.
Dish detergent is a mild detergent, so it does not meet a strict “without chemicals” interpretation, even though some manufacturer guidance recommends it for traditional stainless steel. This article’s water-and-cloth method keeps to the stricter interpretation; use detergent or another cleaner only if your finish’s care guide allows it.

This approach addresses routine grime and selected stains. The cited appliance guidance does not establish that deep corrosion, pitting, or damage to a protective coating can be reversed by household cleaning. If the surface is pitted, peeling, or persistently discolored, consult the manufacturer’s care guidance or service support rather than increasing pressure or trying harsher mixtures.
