There is no verified ranking of the 18 “most popular” Easter flowers, but there are plenty of distinctive spring blooms to choose from. This curated guide covers cut flowers, potted plants, and garden flowers so you can match an Easter table or seasonal display to your space, scent preferences, and household. If you have a cat, read the safety section before bringing any flowers home.

How to choose flowers for an Easter table

Start with the kind of display you want. Cut stems are easy to arrange for a meal; potted bulbs and flowering plants can last beyond it; shrubs and trees are better suited to a garden or larger seasonal display than to a vase. Then consider color, height, fragrance, local availability, after-holiday care, and whether the plant is safe around pets.

These are 18 distinct options, not a measured popularity ranking. Bloom timing and florist availability vary by region and season, and symbolism reflects cultural or religious traditions rather than a botanical property.

18 Easter flowers and flowering plants

1. Easter lily

The white, trumpet-shaped Easter lily is closely associated with the holiday and makes a traditional potted display. Florists and growers force it to bloom for Easter; outdoors, it typically flowers later in the year. It is highly toxic to cats, so avoid it entirely in homes with cats. See the care and safety guidance below before choosing one.

  • For a lasting spring accent: choose a potted bulb or flowering plant, or plant hardy bulbs and perennials outdoors where conditions suit them.
  • For a florist bouquet: combine a focal bloom such as a tulip, rose, or hydrangea with baby’s breath for detail, and ask which stems are available in your area.

Flower symbolism is tradition, not a universal meaning. Farmers’ Almanac and other flower guides attach meanings to seasonal blooms, but interpretations differ across cultures and sources; choose flowers for the look and associations that matter to you rather than treating a meaning as fixed.

Easter lily care and cat safety

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends choosing a compact plant with dark green foliage, one or two open flowers, and several unopened buds. Keep it in bright light away from direct sun and drafts, and water when the soil surface feels dry. Allow excess water to drain.

Remove the yellow anthers before pollen starts to shed. Iowa State Extension explains: “Removing the anthers prolongs the flower’s life and prevents pollen from staining the white petals or table linens.”

Easter lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if any part is eaten. Keep the plant entirely out of a cat-owning home, and contact a veterinarian immediately if you suspect ingestion. Other spring plants can also pose risks: Vermont Extension specifically warns that tulips can be toxic if eaten. Check species-specific safety information for every plant you bring indoors.

After flowering, an Easter lily may be planted outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Acclimate it gradually to outdoor conditions; because it is forced to flower for Easter, it typically blooms later outdoors rather than repeating its holiday display on schedule.
