Sometimes—but only when the shoe’s care instructions explicitly allow it. Nike and New Balance advise against machine washing their shoes, and Converse says not to machine wash its canvas or leather shoes. adidas permits machine washing for certain models, including 4DFWD, with specific precautions. A gentle cycle or mesh bag does not make a shoe safe to wash if its maker says otherwise.
Check whether your shoes can go in the washer
Look up the care directions for the exact shoe model before putting it in a washing machine. Brand advice is not interchangeable: permission for one model does not establish that other shoes from the same brand—or similar shoes from another brand—are washer-safe.

Do not machine wash leather or suede by default. Converse says not to machine wash its leather shoes and advises brushing suede while dry without water; New Balance recommends specialty cleaner for leather or suede. Always follow the exact maker’s directions.
If machine washing is allowed, follow the shoe maker’s instructions
For adidas 4DFWD
- Remove the insoles and laces.
- Put each shoe in its own small pillowcase or mesh laundry bag.
- Select a delicate cycle and, if possible, a small load.
- Wash in cold water with detergent.
- Air dry the shoes. Do not put them in the clothes dryer.
These steps apply to adidas 4DFWD. adidas’s broader running-shoe guidance also calls for cold water and a gentle cycle, with the shoes, insoles and laces placed in a garment bag or pillowcase. adidas says hand washing is gentler and can help shoes last longer.

Check the washer manual, too
Washer instructions depend on the appliance. One Electrolux manual includes a dedicated “RUNNING SHOES” cycle, but still says to check the shoe maker’s recommendations first. It also advises removing debris and laces, avoiding bleach and fabric softener, and not washing footwear with rigid soles or fittings that could damage the shoe or washer. Apply that advice only if it matches your machine’s manual.
Hand clean shoes when machine washing is not approved
If the shoe maker advises against machine washing—or gives no permission—clean by hand instead. The method should suit the material; a process intended for fabric may not be appropriate for suede or leather.

Fabric and athletic shoes
- Brush off loose dirt gently with a soft-bristle brush.
- Test a mild, dye-free detergent on an inconspicuous spot.
- Use the brush to clean, then wipe away residue with a damp cloth.
- Air dry the shoes. New Balance specifies 24 hours before wearing.
Nike likewise recommends brushing with a mild cleaning solution and air drying. Its guidance that cotton, nylon, canvas or polyester are typically suitable for hand washing is not permission to put those shoes in a machine.
Converse canvas and leather
Converse recommends mild soap and lukewarm water applied with a damp cloth or soft brush, after testing the soap in a hidden area. Do not machine wash or dry these shoes.

Suede
Converse advises brushing dirt away while the suede is dry and not using water. New Balance recommends specialty cleaner for suede. Follow the care directions for the specific shoe rather than applying a wet-cleaning method by default.

After cleaning, air dry shoes at room temperature. Do not put them in the clothes dryer or use direct heat: Nike warns that dryer heat can damage shoes, and adidas says not to use the dryer for machine-washed 4DFWD. Converse recommends stuffing shoes with paper towels to help maintain their shape, changing the paper as needed, and keeping them away from direct heat.
