How to clean exterior windows from inside without leaving streaks depends first on the window design: only tilt a sash inward if the manufacturer made it to do so. Follow the model-specific instructions, support the sash securely, and use a mild glass-safe solution with clean tools. If the glass cannot be reached without leaning outside, stop and arrange safe access instead.
First, check whether the window is designed to tilt inward
Find the manufacturer and window series, then consult its owner’s manual or care guide before operating a latch. Tilt-wash double-hung windows can provide inside access to the exterior pane, but release steps vary by product. Pella’s window-cleaning guide and Andersen’s 100 Series tilt instructions illustrate why it matters to use instructions for the actual model. Do not force an unfamiliar latch or sash.

Prepare the area and support the sash
- Move furniture and objects away from the window so you can work without twisting or reaching awkwardly.
- Remove or manage the screen only as directed in the window’s manual.
- Follow the manufacturer’s procedure to tilt the sash. Keep it supported throughout the task. For its 100 Series double-hung windows, Andersen directs users to hold the tilted sash or rest it on a table or chair; use the instructions for your own series rather than assuming the same method applies.
If the sash feels unstable, cannot be held securely, or the pane remains out of reach from a stable position indoors, stop. Do not climb through the opening, lean over the sill, or substitute an unverified tool for safe access.
Choose a compatible cleaner and clean tools
Use mild soapy water or another solution allowed by the window maker. Andersen’s glass-care guidance recommends mild cleaning and warns against abrasive cleaners and metal razor blades on specified coated glass. Check the care instructions especially carefully for Low-E or other treated glass; compatibility can vary.

Pella’s cleaning guide, updated May 14, 2026, offers one option: one cup of white vinegar to ten cups of water. It also recommends lint-free microfiber cloths, applying cleaner to the cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass to protect frames, and using a more diluted solution for squeegee work. Treat that mixture as Pella’s guidance, not a universal recipe; follow the instructions and warranty requirements for your own window.
Useful basics are a lint-free microfiber window cloth and a hand squeegee. Start by gently removing loose debris so grit is not dragged across the pane. Avoid abrasive pads and do not use a metal blade on coated glass unless the specific window instructions explicitly allow it.

Wash from the top down to limit streaks
- Work when the glass is cool and shaded if possible. Andersen cautions: “Cleaning in direct sunlight can cause streaks or cause cleaning products to dry on your window and door glass.” (Andersen Windows glass-care guidance.)
- Apply the approved cleaner with a clean cloth or washer. Pella suggests a zig-zag motion and wiping the squeegee edge after each pass.
- Starting at the top, pull the squeegee downward in controlled passes. Keep its edge clean between passes; use a fresh, lint-free cloth to dry the edges and pick up remaining moisture. Lincoln’s owner’s manual also advises working from the top down and not wiping once the glass is already dry.
- Inspect the pane in diffuse light. If marks remain, rinse and dry again with clean tools rather than scrubbing dry glass. Water quality, surface condition, coatings, and technique can affect the finish, so no single cleaner or motion guarantees a streak-free result.
Return the sash to its frame
Use the model-specific instructions to raise and secure the sash. Check that it is seated and locked before moving furniture back or treating the task as complete. If the sash does not return smoothly, do not force it; consult the manufacturer or a qualified window professional.

If the window is fixed, cannot tilt inward, or is unstable when opened, the exterior surface may not be safely reachable from indoors. Arrange service through a building manager or qualified professional rather than leaning outside. Magnetic cleaners and extension poles are not universal substitutes: glass thickness, pane spacing, and access conditions differ, so use them only when their suitability for the specific window is established.
