There is no single best refrigerator for every kitchen: the right choice depends first on whether it fits the opening and delivery route, then on configuration, storage layout, energy use and the features you will actually use. Consumer Reports says its 2026 ratings cover more than 300 models across five configurations, but the available published information does not identify 15 exact winners. Rather than invent a ranked list, this guide explains how to choose and compare real models.

Why this guide does not name 15 specific models

Consumer Reports’ 2026 refrigerator roundup, updated June 10, 2026, describes ratings across bottom-freezer, built-in, French-door, side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators. The available information does not establish a complete list of 15 exact picks or provide the specifications and test results needed to compare them responsibly. Model availability and specifications can also vary by market and change over time. Use the selection framework below to shortlist current models, then check each model number against its manufacturer’s specifications and EnergyGuide label.

Which type of refrigerator should I choose?

Configuration affects access, usable storage, door clearance and often price and energy use. These are general tendencies, not guarantees about every model.

French-door

Two fresh-food doors sit above a bottom freezer. The wide refrigerator compartment is popular and often feature-rich, but the format tends to cost more and use more energy than simpler designs. Compare shelf and drawer layout, freezer access, door clearance and the reliability evidence for the exact model. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide cautions that many brands have middling or worse predicted reliability scores for this configuration, with exceptions in its survey data; that finding does not predict the performance of every model.

  • DEDICATED FREEZER: Enjoy the convenience of a separate freezer compartment with ample space for your frozen goods, along with an adjustable thermostat and interior lighting for both compartments.
  • SLEEK DESIGN: Featuring a sleek and durable platinum design with chrome trim and handles, this small fridge freezer adds an upscale retro look that will elevate your space.
  • FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION: The adjustable/removable shelves offer flexibility to customize the interior layout according to your needs, accommodating items of various sizes with ease. A reversible door also allows for flexible opening to best suit your space

Side-by-side

Fresh and frozen food occupy vertical compartments behind narrow doors, which can suit a constrained kitchen and keep both sections accessible at standing height. The tradeoff is a narrow freezer: check whether the frozen items you regularly buy will fit.

Top-freezer

The freezer sits above the refrigerator compartment. This straightforward format is often less costly, and ENERGY STAR says top-freezer refrigerators tend to use less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side designs. Fresh food is lower than in a bottom-freezer model, so consider how that affects everyday access.

Bottom-freezer

Fresh food is above a lower freezer, putting frequently used refrigerator shelves closer to eye level. Compare freezer-drawer organization and access as well as the unit’s overall footprint.

Built-in and counter-depth

These formats can align more closely with cabinetry, but check usable storage and price against a standard-depth refrigerator. Consumer Reports maintains separate guides for counter-depth and built-in models; the available 2026 roundup information does not establish exact model-level winners for either category.

How do I measure for a new refrigerator?

Measure the space and the route into it before shopping, then compare those measurements with the exact model’s published dimensions. Consumer Reports organizes its ratings by width and notes that stated capacity does not necessarily equal usable capacity.

  1. Measure the opening. Record its width, height and depth at more than one point, since cabinets, flooring or trim may make the space uneven.
  2. Check clearance. Account for the manufacturer’s specified ventilation gaps, the door’s swing and any space needed to open drawers fully. Confirm that nearby walls, counters and cabinets will not block access.
  3. Measure the delivery path. Check hallways, turns, stairs, doorways and the kitchen entrance. Ask the retailer whether doors or handles can be removed for delivery and whether that affects installation or warranty coverage.
  4. Compare the exact model dimensions. Verify width, height and depth—including handles or other projections where applicable—in the model’s specifications. Do not assume that two refrigerators described as the same style or capacity have the same fit.

How big a refrigerator should I buy?

Consumer Reports reports a manufacturer recommendation of 19 to 22 cubic feet for a family of four. Treat that range as a starting point, not a universal requirement: shopping frequency, bulk buying, household routines and interior layout all affect how much space is useful.

Compare shelf and drawer arrangement, door bins, freezer organization and the space taken by features such as an icemaker. When possible, assess usable capacity and layout rather than choosing by the headline cubic-foot figure alone. A larger refrigerator is not automatically a better fit for your kitchen or energy needs.

How do I compare temperature performance, energy use and reliability?

Look for model-level performance evidence

Consumer Reports says its laboratory evaluates thermostat performance, temperature uniformity, noise, ease of use, energy efficiency, crisper performance and icemaker performance when present. Use those measures to compare specific models where published results are available; a brand-level score cannot tell you everything about an individual refrigerator.

Read the EnergyGuide label

Compare the shortlisted models’ estimated yearly electricity use and operating cost on their EnergyGuide labels. Make the comparison between models of a similar size and configuration: certification by itself does not make unlike refrigerators directly comparable.

ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than products meeting the federal minimum standard. That is a group-level comparison, not a promise of a particular bill reduction for your home. ENERGY STAR also recommends choosing an appropriately sized unit, considering a top-freezer design and fewer doors when saving energy is a priority, keeping the refrigerator at 35–38°F, positioning it away from heat sources, allowing air circulation and checking door seals. Follow the model manual for installation and maintenance instructions.

Use reliability information carefully

Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand analysis says its type-level scores incorporate laboratory testing, survey data and price, and that brand strength varies by refrigerator configuration. As Breann Chai, who oversees refrigerator testing, put it: “There isn’t one best brand of refrigerator because brands tend to focus on particular segments or styles or prices of the market.” See Consumer Reports’ 2026 refrigerator brand analysis, updated September 25, 2026. Use brand information as context, not as a substitute for the model’s specifications, test results and configuration-specific reliability evidence.

Through-the-door ice and water

Consumer Reports says through-the-door dispensers use energy and storage and require the most repairs among the features it discusses. Its member survey found that 31 percent of refrigerators with icemakers had a problem by the end of the fifth year. The survey covered more than 71,500 new refrigerators purchased between 2015 and 2025 and was published in a buying guide updated July 10, 2026; it is a survey finding, not a prediction for a particular model.

Convertible compartments

Some models let you change a compartment between refrigerator and freezer use. Chai told Consumer Reports: “We’ve even seen models that give you the capability to convert some compartments from freezer to fridge and vice versa.” Check the exact model’s instructions to confirm which compartment converts and what temperature settings are supported.

Refrigerant and maintenance

ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants in its guidance. Check the specific model’s documentation rather than assuming its refrigerant type. For cleaning, seal checks and other maintenance, use the manufacturer’s instructions.

Who handles delivery, installation and haul-away?

Services and coverage depend on the retailer and delivery location. Before buying, confirm that the retailer can deliver through your access route, install the refrigerator as needed, connect a water line if the model requires one, and remove or recycle the old unit. ENERGY STAR says many retailers will pick up and recycle an old refrigerator when selling a new one, but ask the retailer serving your address about its terms and any preparation requirements.

Use this checklist to compare shortlisted refrigerators

  • Does the exact model fit the opening, clearances and delivery route?
  • Does its configuration suit your kitchen and daily access needs?
  • Does its interior layout provide useful storage beyond the stated capacity?
  • Are model-specific temperature, uniformity, noise and energy results available?
  • How do the EnergyGuide yearly electricity use and estimated cost compare with similarly sized models?
  • Does the reliability evidence apply to this configuration or exact model, rather than only to a brand generally?
  • Are ice, water or convertible-compartment features worth their storage, energy or repair tradeoffs?
  • Has the retailer confirmed delivery, installation, water connection if needed, and old-unit removal or recycling?
