Choose between an agitator and an impeller by comparing specific washer models—not by assuming one mechanism is best for every household. An agitator is a central post; an impeller is a low-profile cone or disc that leaves more open space, which may help with bulky loads. Check each model’s capacity, dimensions, efficiency figures and EnergyGuide estimate against the laundry you usually wash.
Agitator vs. Impeller: What Is the Difference?
A traditional top-load agitator washer has a central post in the basket. An impeller top-loader uses a low-profile cone or disc instead. With no bulky center post, an impeller model may offer more usable room for laundry, but the actual capacity and dimensions vary by model.
The mechanism alone does not establish how well a particular washer cleans or how it treats every fabric. ENERGY STAR describes impeller top-loaders as a more energy- and water-efficient option than traditional top-load washers, but model-specific figures are the better basis for comparing machines.

| What to compare | Agitator top-loader | Impeller top-loader |
|---|---|---|
| Wash mechanism | Central post | Low-profile cone or disc |
| Usable space | The center post occupies basket space | No bulky center post; may leave more usable room |
| Bulky laundry | Check the model’s capacity and dimensions against your items | Open basket may suit bulky loads; check the model’s capacity and dimensions |

How to Compare Washer Models
- List your usual loads. Consider the size and type of laundry you wash regularly, including any bulky items. Match that pattern to the washer’s stated capacity.
- Check dimensions. Compare the machine’s dimensions with the available laundry space and delivery route.
- Compare efficiency figures. IMEF measures energy efficiency, with higher values indicating greater efficiency. IWF measures water use per cubic foot of capacity, with lower values indicating greater water efficiency.
- Read the EnergyGuide label. Use its estimated annual energy use and operating cost to compare models, keeping in mind these are estimates based on standardized assumptions.
- Verify the exact model. Compare the specifications and labels for the particular machines you are considering rather than relying on the agitator or impeller label alone.
What Efficiency Figures Can Tell You
ENERGY STAR describes impeller top-loaders as more energy- and water-efficient than traditional top-load washers. Still, actual efficiency is model-specific. Compare IMEF and IWF values and use the EnergyGuide label to review estimated annual energy use and cost.

ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. It also reports that full-sized certified washers use 14 gallons per load, compared with 20 gallons per load for a standard machine. These are broad comparisons from ENERGY STAR, not guarantees about any two individual models.
For its definitions, ENERGY STAR explains that IWF measures gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity and that higher IMEF indicates greater energy efficiency. See ENERGY STAR’s clothes washer guidance and its clothes washer criteria.
Capacity and Bulky Loads
The absence of a bulky agitator leaves more open basket space, which may matter when washing bulky laundry. Do not treat that as a guarantee that every impeller washer will fit a particular item: check the specific model’s capacity and dimensions, and consider the size of your usual loads.

Does an Agitator Clean Better or Damage Clothes?
The dossier does not establish that one mechanism cleans better in all circumstances or that every current agitator model is rougher on clothes. ENERGY STAR makes a broad statement that agitators can be rough on clothes, but that is not a universal verdict for every washer, load or fabric. For a performance comparison, consult the manuals or independent tests for the exact models and conditions you care about.

Which top-load washer should I choose, an agitator or an impeller?
Compare the specific models’ capacity, dimensions, IMEF, IWF and EnergyGuide estimates with your household’s usual loads. The mechanism alone does not determine which machine is the better choice for you.

Does an impeller washer have more room?
Without a bulky center post, an impeller washer may have more usable basket space. Check the exact model’s capacity and dimensions, especially if you wash bulky items.
What do IMEF and IWF mean?
IMEF is an energy-efficiency measure; higher values indicate greater efficiency. IWF measures water use per cubic foot of capacity; lower values indicate greater water efficiency, according to ENERGY STAR.
How do I compare estimated washer operating costs?
Use the EnergyGuide label to compare models’ estimated annual energy use and operating costs. These estimates use standardized assumptions, so your actual costs may differ.
Are agitator washers always rougher on clothes?
No universal conclusion is supported for every current model and load. ENERGY STAR makes a broad statement that agitators can be rough on clothes; for a specific comparison, check model manuals or independent tests that identify the machines and conditions.
