First identify what “not working” means: no power, weak suction, a stopped brushroll, or a vacuum that shuts off. Turn it off and disconnect it from power before clearing debris or handling the brushroll; on a cordless model, follow its guide for battery removal before servicing. Then use the checks below and confirm any model-specific instructions in Shark’s support center.
Start with safe, general checks
These checks can resolve common airflow and maintenance problems, but they are not a universal repair procedure. Follow the owner’s guide for your exact vacuum.
- Switch off and isolate power. Unplug a corded vacuum. For a battery model, remove the battery before servicing if its guide instructs you to do so; the IX140/IZ140 guide explicitly calls for this.
- Empty the dust cup. Refit it securely.
- Check the airflow path. Look for blockages in the hose, wand, pod, handle, nozzle, and other openings. Remove only what you can reach safely.
- Clean the brushroll. With power disconnected, remove hair, string, and fibers wrapped around it.
- Clean the filters as directed in the owner’s guide. If a filter is washable, let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Shark’s general upright guidance says to allow the filters it describes to dry for 24 hours.
- Reassemble and check connections. Make sure the dust cup, filters, wand, pod, hose, and nozzle are seated correctly before trying the vacuum again.
If the Shark vacuum will not turn on
Corded models
Check the cord for visible damage. If it appears intact, try another outlet and make sure the nozzle, pod, wand, and hose are connected correctly. Do not use a vacuum with a damaged cord; contact Shark support for help.
Cordless models
Check the battery indicator and charging instructions in the guide for your model. Light patterns are not consistent across all Shark vacuums: for example, the IX140/IZ140 guide identifies a flashing bottom LED as a battery that needs charging, while other patterns can indicate temperature or service issues. Use that guide only for those models, rather than applying its indicators to another series.

If suction is weak or absent
Start by emptying the dust cup, checking the airflow path for a blockage, and cleaning the filters according to the owner’s guide. A washed filter must be completely dry before it goes back in. Depending on the model, low battery, a filter installed incorrectly, or a damaged filter can also contribute to low suction.
If cleaning does not help, check whether the filter is damaged and whether a replacement is needed. Match any replacement to the vacuum’s exact model number: Shark filters are not universal, and the compatible part may vary by series. Shark’s support materials provide model-specific maintenance guidance.

If the brushroll does not spin
Switch off and disconnect the vacuum before removing hair or other debris from the brushroll. On IX140/IZ140 models, Shark’s guide also says to clear blockages and check that the handheld vacuum is tilted back far enough for the brushroll to engage. If the nozzle lights are out on those models, check the connections between the handheld unit, wand, and nozzle. Engagement and indicator guidance may differ on other models, so consult the correct guide.
If the vacuum shuts off during use
A protective thermostat can shut off some models when they overheat. A blockage, battery issue, or overheating may also be involved, particularly on cordless vacuums. Stop using the vacuum, disconnect it as directed by its guide, and check for blockages only once it is safe to do so.
