Before buying, check the exact mattress model’s current instructions for slat spacing and width, center support, adjustable-base compatibility, and warranty conditions. Those requirements vary by brand, so there is no single slat gap that is right for every memory foam mattress.
What kind of bed frame works with a memory foam mattress?
A suitable frame provides firm, stable, even support across the mattress. A frame’s advertised size or appearance does not show whether it meets those requirements. A rigid platform or a properly supported slatted frame may work; a flat foundation or adjustable base may also be suitable when the mattress maker approves it.
Start with the mattress instructions, not a general rule of thumb. The manufacturer’s requirements may specify support type, slat dimensions, center support, and acceptable bases. They may also affect warranty coverage.
How far apart should the slats be?
Measure the open gap between slats and the width of each slat, then compare both measurements with the instructions for your exact mattress model. Manufacturer limits differ:

These examples are not interchangeable standards. Confirm the current specification for your mattress rather than averaging the figures or applying one brand’s limit to another.
Check the frame’s structure and fit
Center support and legs
Look for a center rail or other support where the frame design and mattress instructions call for it, and inspect the legs and joints for stability. Consider the combined load of the mattress, occupants, and any foundation; use a frame with a stated capacity that covers that load. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal weight rating for bed frames.

Purple’s support guidance calls for a center support and at least 5–6 legs for Queen, King, and California King frames, and 4 legs for Twin and Full. These are Purple-specific requirements, not general rules for every mattress. Purple support guidance.
Dimensions
Check the mattress dimensions against the frame’s interior dimensions, including if you have a nonstandard or non-US size. Tempur-Pedic advises checking exact dimensions. A frame labeled with a familiar size may still be a poor fit if its interior measurements do not match the mattress. Tempur-Pedic guidance.

Compare the main base options

What to do if your current frame does not meet the requirements
- Identify the mattress. Find its exact model and consult the maker’s current support and warranty instructions.
- Measure the frame. Check interior dimensions, slat width, and the open gap between slats.
- Inspect the structure. Note center rails, legs, joints, and any stated load rating; account for the mattress, occupants, and foundation together.
- Compare each detail with the mattress instructions. Check support type, geometry, capacity, and any restrictions on foundations or adjustable bases.
- Choose an approved correction. Replace the frame or use a foundation only if both the mattress maker and frame maker permit that combination.
Do not assume plywood or a bunkie board will fix overly wide gaps. Tempur-Pedic warns against plywood and bunkie boards for its mattresses, illustrating why additions need model-specific approval. Tempur-Pedic guidance.

Support requirements can be part of a mattress warranty’s conditions. Read the current warranty for your specific model and keep the support specifications or purchase information for the base. Sealy, for example, says that a mattress not placed on its foundation or adjustable base must sit on a completely flat, solid surface with adequate center support. Sealy help center.
