Each has different coverage, so a result—or no result—in one portal does not answer every question about a property.
Find the property on Chicago’s zoning map

Open the City’s Zoning and Land Use Map. Use the quick search to enter a street address, a 10-digit Property Identification Number (PIN), or an intersection. The City’s map help says address and intersection searches zoom to a street centerline, while a PIN search zooms to the parcel. If the result is unclear, try another accepted search input.

Zoom in on the block or parcel you need to review. The map provides more zoning detail at closer scales. Click the relevant location to open Identify Results and read the information for the selected point. Check that the point corresponds to the parcel you mean; an address location does not necessarily represent every parcel boundary.

If Identify Results show Planned Development (PD) zoning, note the PD number and open the associated ordinance. The City’s September 25, 2020 letter about PD 150 explains that the PD number opens the ordinance. Check that the ordinance and any subarea you rely on match the parcel under review.

Look up public permit and inspection history
Use the City’s Building Permit and Inspection Records portal to search public building permit and inspection information. The portal has a user agreement. Review its record detail and disclaimer when interpreting a result: the City does not guarantee that the information is accurate, in sequence, timely, or complete.
Check the status of an application

Open the City’s Building Permit Application Status resource. Search by property address for limited information, or enter the permit application number for fuller status details.

Find the application number in your application documents if you have them. The City help page says most numbers are nine digits beginning with “1”; some begin with “B2” or “D,” depending on the program.

For plan-based applications, the number may show review progress, corrections, and ProjectDox reports. The City says this status site is designed mainly for applicants and authorized representatives. Its help page directs questions about plan-based applications to the licensed professional who submitted the plans; for other application types, it identifies the Department of Buildings as a contact.

Understand why a record may be missing
The application-status portal covers applications started within the prior 36 months, according to the City’s undated help page. Older applications and issued permits may not appear there. A missing result in this portal is not proof that no permit exists; it may reflect the portal’s coverage or the limits of an address search. The application-status portal and the public permit-and-inspection records portal are separate resources, not interchangeable complete histories.

A permit issuance does not confirm that the permitted work was performed or that it complied with the permit or Chicago’s Municipal Code.

The City says inspection and alleged-violation entries reflect conditions found at the time of inspection and may not describe the property’s current condition.
