Fit only what the unit’s measured interior can hold while leaving the access and stacking space you need. Start with your largest furniture and appliances, add the boxes and bins, then compare the inventory with the specific facility’s usable floor dimensions and height. Room-count labels and provider examples are useful estimates, not packing guarantees.
What determines how much fits?
A storage unit’s floor area and cubic capacity are different measures. Floor area tells you the available footprint; usable height affects how much you can stack. Public Storage’s size guide lists a 5×5 unit as 25 square feet and 200 cubic feet, and a 10×10 as 100 square feet and 800 cubic feet. Those examples imply eight feet of height, but do not assume every facility has that ceiling or that all of it is usable. Ask for the actual interior dimensions.
Capacity also depends on the shape of your belongings, the way you pack, and whether you need room to reach items. A couch, mattress, appliance, or unusually shaped piece can dictate the layout even when the total volume seems modest. Irregular shapes and interior obstructions can make some advertised capacity difficult to use.
Use size examples as a starting point
Public Storage publishes the following nominal areas, volumes, and household or item examples. The examples are provider estimates, not universal capacities; the company cautions that “Sizes are approximate and may vary by facility.”

| Nominal size | Area and volume listed by Public Storage | Provider example |
|---|---|---|
| 5×5 | 25 sq ft; 200 cu ft | Closet contents; up to 10 large moving boxes, a twin or full mattress, or a small desk or chair. |
| 5×10 | 50 sq ft; 400 cu ft | Studio-apartment contents; 20+ large moving boxes, around two large furniture pieces, or a twin/queen mattress. |
| 5×15 | 75 sq ft; 600 cu ft | Large-bedroom contents; around 30 large boxes, bedroom furniture, a kitchen table, and luggage. |
| 10×10 | 100 sq ft; 800 cu ft | Two small bedrooms or a living area; around 40 large boxes and large furniture sets. |
| 10×15 | 150 sq ft; 1,200 cu ft | A two-bedroom home; around 60 large boxes and bulky furniture. |
| 10×20 | 200 sq ft; 1,600 cu ft | A three-bedroom home; around 80 large boxes, furniture, and full kitchenware sets. |
Household labels vary across providers. Public Storage associates a 5×15 with a large bedroom, a 10×10 with two small bedrooms, a 10×15 with a two-bedroom home, and a 10×20 with a three-bedroom home. Extra Space Storage lists 5×5, 5×10, or 5×15 as possible sizes for a one-bedroom apartment, and 10×10 or 10×15 for a two-bedroom apartment. The range is a reminder to size from your own inventory rather than from the number of rooms alone.
These values and examples come from provider guides, not an independent capacity study. Verify the local unit dimensions rather than relying on a nominal label; Public Storage’s guide also contains an inconsistent area figure for a 10×25, so that size should be checked directly with the facility.

Estimate your needs before choosing a unit
- Make an inventory. List furniture, mattresses, appliances, and other bulky or awkward possessions separately from items that will go into boxes or bins.
- Measure the largest pieces and containers. Record height, width, and depth. Note items that cannot be turned or stacked easily.
- Decide how much access you need. If you will retrieve belongings regularly, reserve space to move through the unit and reach what is behind or below other items. Tighter packing can use more of the footprint, but makes access harder.
- Plan vertical stacking realistically. Stacking can make better use of height, but requires sturdy boxes and heavier items on the bottom. Do not count on stacking fragile, unstable, or unusually shaped belongings.
- Compare your inventory with the actual unit. Ask the facility for interior floor dimensions and usable height, and account for any obstructions. If the estimate is close, leave room for access and the gaps created by irregular shapes.
When should you choose more space?
Consider the larger of two available options if your largest items leave little room to arrange the rest, you need to reach belongings often, or the smaller unit only works with tight stacking you cannot safely manage. If most of your belongings are consistently sized boxes and you can stack them safely, the footprint may go further than it would with bulky furniture. The right choice depends on the measured items and intended layout—not just the room count printed beside the unit size.
