Check the soil and plants every few weeks, and water only when the soil is dry or plants are wilting and the usual signs of moisture have disappeared. Open terrariums lose water faster, so they need more frequent checks.
How often to water a closed terrarium
For many closed terrariums, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests watering every three to six months; the University of Missouri Extension gives four to six months as a rule of thumb. These are practical care ranges, not measured averages or guarantees. A tightly sealed terrarium may need water less often, while a lid that lets water vapor escape may mean more frequent attention.
Check your terrarium every few weeks, but let its condition—not the calendar—decide whether to water. Look for dry soil, wilting plants, and a lack of the light condensation that can indicate moisture is still cycling inside. Iowa State advises watering when soil becomes dry; Missouri Extension identifies absent condensation or wilting as signs to consider watering. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and University of Missouri Extension provide the underlying guidance.
How often to check an open or partly open terrarium
Open terrariums
An open container loses moisture more readily than a closed one. Check its soil more often and water when it is nearly dry, adjusting to how quickly it dries in your home. Open terrariums suit succulents and other plants that tolerate drier conditions; moisture-loving tropical plants are generally a better match for closed containers. The University of Florida IFAS Extension and Missouri Extension discuss matching plants to terrarium conditions.

Partly open containers and ordinary lids
A container with a lid is not necessarily airtight. Even a small opening can let water vapor escape, particularly in a dry indoor environment. Check soil and plant condition rather than assuming a lidded terrarium will hold moisture indefinitely. A tightly sealed terrarium can cycle water internally and go a long time without added water, but many home containers gradually lose vapor. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension explains how the seal affects moisture retention.
Signs your terrarium needs water
- The soil is dry. This is the clearest reason to consider adding water.
- Plants are wilting. Wilting can be a sign to assess moisture, though avoid adding water automatically if the soil is already wet.
- Usual condensation is absent. A lack of condensation, together with dry soil or plant stress, may indicate the terrarium needs a small amount of water.
Light condensation can be a useful sign that some moisture remains. Persistent, heavy fogging is different: it points to excess moisture, not a need to water. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends only a small amount of water, usually a few times a year, for a closed terrarium or one with a narrow neck.

How to water without overdoing it
- Add a small amount. For a closed terrarium, a fine-mist spray bottle can help control the amount, but it is optional. Water lightly rather than soaking the soil.
- Check for pooling. Terrariums generally lack external drainage, so excess water can collect at the bottom and contribute to root disease. Avoid leaving standing water.
- Reassess after a couple of days. If condensation becomes excessive, briefly leave the lid off or wipe away some condensation. Do not add more water.
If you suspect you have added too much, remove visible excess water if you can do so without damaging the plants, then allow the container to air briefly. Because excess water can be difficult to remove from a terrarium, cautious watering is easier than correcting a saturated setup. Missouri Extension and the RHS recommend light watering and moisture management.

Watering frequency depends on how well the container is sealed, the plants and substrate, the light, and indoor humidity. “Closed” can mean airtight or simply covered by a lid that leaks some water vapor. A closed setup with moisture-loving tropical plants has different needs from an open container planted with succulents. These differences explain why care guides offer ranges rather than one schedule for every terrarium. Avoid direct sunlight: heat can build up inside the container and injure plants.
