Best Double Laundry Hampers for Real Homes: What to Buy and Where to Put It

A good double hamper is more than a basket with two sides. The right one fits your laundry path, handles wet towels, clears appliance doors, and holds enough for the way your household actually washes clothes.

A double laundry hamper should solve one simple problem: laundry needs to be sorted before it becomes a pile on the floor. The best one for your home is not always the prettiest basket or the largest online listing. It is the hamper that fits your room, clears the washer and dryer doors, handles damp textiles, and can be carried or rolled without turning laundry day into a wrestling match.

For most US homes in 2026, a practical double hamper costs about $20 to $230. Budget fabric and felt models usually land around $20 to $40. Better woven, resin wicker, bamboo-frame, or lidded fabric hampers often run $45 to $90. Premium framed canvas carts and higher-end double sorters can reach $160 to $230 or more. Capacity matters just as much as price: compact double hampers often hold 75 to 90 liters total, while family-size options commonly run 120 to 160 liters. We see plenty of useful models around 140 to 145 liters, which is roughly 37 to 38 gallons.

On our job sites, we treat hampers like any other storage item that affects a room’s function. A hamper that blocks a dryer door, crowds a utility sink, traps wet towels, or pinches a 30-inch laundry closet can make a well-built laundry area feel poorly planned. Below is a contractor’s way to choose the right double laundry hamper for your layout, your household, and your budget.

Best Double Laundry Hampers by Home Situation

The right double hamper depends on where laundry actually lands. A family mudroom has different needs than a second-floor laundry closet. A rental needs flexibility. A remodeled laundry room needs dimensions planned before cabinets are ordered.

  • Generous Capacity: The overall dimension of the entire hamper is 23.6'' (60cm) x 13.8'' (35cm) x 25.6'' (65cm), and the capacity is 136L, which can hold 3-4 loads of laundry. The capacity of each compartment is 68L, and they both can hold 1.5-2 loads respectively.
Home situation Best hamper type Typical capacity Expected 2026 cost What to watch
Narrow laundry closet Slim vertical double hamper or two narrow singles 75-110 liters $20-$70 Washer door swing, closet door clearance, standing room
Family laundry room Open-top double hamper with removable bags 120-160 liters $45-$120 Bag strength, washable liners, enough room for full loads
Mudroom-laundry combo Steel-frame canvas, resin wicker, or washable synthetic hamper 120-160 liters $70-$230 Wet towels, sports gear, shoes, traffic damage
Second-floor laundry Lightweight hamper with removable carry bags 90-145 liters $35-$120 Stair safety, handles, leak risk from wet items
Bathroom-adjacent laundry Plastic, resin wicker, or metal-frame hamper with washable liner 75-140 liters $35-$120 Humidity, mildew, trapped odors
Visible bedroom or hallway Lidded woven or framed fabric double hamper 90-140 liters $60-$200+ Lid clearance, ventilation, snagging fabrics
Remodeled laundry with cabinetry Vented pull-out bins or a planned freestanding bay Based on cabinet width Hundreds to several thousand added to cabinetry scope Ventilation, cleanability, replacement clearance

If you only take one construction-minded tip from this guide, make it this: mock up the hamper footprint with painter’s tape before you buy. Mark the width and depth on the floor, then open the washer, dryer, closet door, cabinet doors, and utility sink base if you have one. Carry a full basket through the space. If the tape layout fails, the hamper will fail too.

What Makes a Double Hamper Worth Buying

A double hamper is useful because it sorts laundry before wash day. Most households use the two compartments for lights and darks, towels and clothing, kids and adults, or delicates and regular loads. The best versions make that sorting easy without creating a new nuisance.

Removable bags beat fixed dividers in most homes

If the hamper sits next to the washer, a fixed divider can work. If the hamper is in a bedroom, hallway, bathroom, or mudroom, removable bags are usually better. You can lift one side and carry only the load you need. That matters in two-story homes, apartments, and laundry closets where there is no room to drag the full hamper to the appliance.

Look for two separate liner bags with reinforced stitching and handles. Thin liners tend to tear at the top corners first. A family-size liner full of towels can easily weigh 15 to 25 pounds depending on moisture. If the bag feels flimsy empty, it will not improve when wet towels and denim are inside.

Capacity should match real laundry volume

Small double hampers around 75 to 90 liters are fine for one person, a guest room, a nursery, or a tight closet. For a couple, 100 to 120 liters is usually more comfortable. For families, we prefer 120 liters or more, and 140 to 160 liters is often the sweet spot. That size lets the hamper hold several days of clothing without forcing everything into one compressed, poorly ventilated pile.

Do not buy only by gallon claims. Check the actual dimensions. A 145-liter hamper may be 28 to 34 inches wide, 14 to 18 inches deep, and 24 to 30 inches tall depending on frame style. In a 24-inch-deep laundry closet, that depth can consume almost all of the standing space.

Open-top is more practical than lidded for high volume

Lids hide clutter, but they also slow down use. In family laundry rooms, mudrooms, and kids’ rooms, open-top hampers usually perform better because people actually use them. Lidded hampers make sense in bedrooms, hallways, and visible bathroom areas, but they need ventilation and enough vertical clearance to open without hitting a counter or shelf.

Wet towels, workout clothes, swimsuits, and cleaning rags should not sit sealed under a lid. If your hamper location regularly receives damp items, add a hook, peg rail, or short drying bar nearby. Let the item air out before it goes into the hamper.

Material Comparison: Which Hamper Belongs in Which Room

Material is where many homeowners overbuy for looks or underbuy for durability. A laundry hamper lives in a rougher environment than most decorative baskets. It gets dragged, loaded unevenly, exposed to humidity, and sometimes filled with wet towels.

Material Best use Typical cost range Strengths Weak points
Polyester, felt, mesh, lightweight fabric Rentals, dorms, kids’ rooms, temporary storage $20-$40 Light, inexpensive, easy to move Can sag, tip, stain, or lose shape
Plastic Bathrooms, damp rooms, utility spaces $25-$70 Washable, moisture tolerant, low maintenance Less decorative, may crack if overloaded
Water hyacinth, rattan, seagrass Visible bedrooms, finished laundry rooms $60-$140+ Warm furniture-like appearance Can hold moisture, snag fabrics, harder to clean
Resin wicker over steel Mudrooms, bathrooms, busy laundry areas $50-$120 Moisture resistant, sturdier than soft fabric Quality depends on frame and weave
Canvas over steel frame Heavy family use, utility laundry rooms, remodels $100-$230+ Durable, repairable, easy to sort and move Costs more, looks utilitarian
Bamboo frame with fabric bags Bedrooms, light-use laundry areas $45-$100 Warm look, lightweight frame Can loosen if overloaded or kept damp

For damp climates, bathroom-adjacent laundry, or rooms with poor ventilation, we lean toward plastic, resin wicker, metal-frame canvas, or washable synthetic liners. Untreated natural fibers can work in dry, conditioned spaces, but they are a poor match for wet towels and humidity.

For mudroom-laundry combinations, steel-frame or resin-wicker units are usually better than felt. Mudrooms collect towels, jackets, sports uniforms, dog towels, and shoes. Soft hampers can collapse under that abuse. A washable liner is not optional in that setting; it is the part that keeps the storage system sanitary.

Best Picks by Budget

Because inventory changes quickly, it is better to buy by category and specification than chase one model name. These are the price bands we would use when advising a homeowner in 2026.

Best budget range: $20 to $40

This range covers collapsible polyester, felt, mesh, and lightweight fabric double hampers. We have seen retail examples around $20 to $26 for felt double hampers, with some sale pricing near $20.80. These are good for rentals, dorms, children’s rooms, guest rooms, and short-term organization.

Buy a budget hamper when flexibility matters more than lifespan. Look for a reinforced rim, two separate compartments, handles, and a wipeable or washable interior. Avoid tall soft-sided models with no frame if they will sit in a hallway or closet; once they sag, they steal more floor space and look messy.

Best midrange range: $45 to $90

This is the practical middle for most homeowners. You will find resin wicker, water hyacinth, bamboo-frame, lidded fabric, and sturdier double sorters with removable liners. Current retail examples include natural water-hyacinth double hampers around $71 on sale from about $133.99, and hand-woven oval double hampers around $69.99.

For visible laundry rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms, this range usually balances appearance and function. Check for liner removability, washable bags, lid hardware, and interior smoothness. If the basket is woven, run your hand along the inside. Snags that catch your hand can catch sweaters, leggings, towels, and delicates.

Best premium range: $100 to $230+

Premium double hampers include heavy canvas carts, metal-frame systems, higher-end lidded sorters, and furniture-grade pieces. Commercial-style double sorter carts can run around $160 on sale from roughly $230. Some premium double frame hampers sit around $200.

This range makes sense when the hamper gets daily use, remains visible, or is part of a laundry-room remodel. A steel frame, strong casters, replaceable bags, and a cleanable structure can justify the higher cost. For a busy family, a $180 cart that lasts years and rolls smoothly may be cheaper in practice than replacing a $35 sagging sorter every year.

Room-by-Room Buying Advice

Small laundry closet

A small laundry closet is the easiest place to make a bad hamper choice. Many laundry closets are only about 24 to 30 inches deep, and the appliance doors already need that space. A wide decorative double hamper may look good online but leave no place to stand.

Use a slim vertical double hamper, two narrow single hampers, or removable bags stored on hooks. Measure the clear floor area with the washer and dryer doors open. If your front-load washer door swings into the only standing zone, the hamper should not live there. A 12- to 15-inch-deep unit is often more realistic than a 17- to 20-inch-deep decorative sorter.

Family laundry room

For families, capacity and speed matter. Choose 120 liters or more, preferably with two removable bags. Open-top designs usually work better because kids and adults can toss items in without lifting a lid. If you wash towels separately, label one side for towels and one for clothes, or use different liner colors.

Place the hamper where clothes naturally land. In many homes, that is near the room entry, not tucked behind the dryer. Leave access to detergent storage, the lint filter, appliance controls, and the walking path. A hamper that must be moved every load is in the wrong place.

  • Sturdy Top Lid: A flip-open lid keeps your dirty laundry discreetly hidden from view to keep your bedroom looking neat, while the 3 neutral color choices are sure to compliment any room decor.
  • Firm & Stable: Constructed from 300D cationic fabric and 1.2mm adhesive coated EVA foam, this laundry hamper is fitted with 2mm cardboard inserts on top and bottom for structure stability. Along with a steel rod and 6 supporting glass fiber pole rods, this hamper is built solid and firm for use.
  • Easy to Install: Simply put 6 supporting rods into the fixed insert tubes, tie 8 olive buckles into corresponding suspension loops, and it's ready to use. Set up in minutes, and also folds flat for convenient storage when not in use.
  • Two Large Compartments: With 2 large divided sections, you can easily separate darks and lights, clothing from linens, his and her items, or adult pieces. Two included laundry bags with handles fits onto the hamper firm and tight with drawstring stoppers. Use the handles to easily pull out the removable laundry bags with dirty laundry for wash.
  • Generous Capacity: The overall dimension of the entire hamper is 23.6'' ( 60cm ) x 13.8'' ( 35cm ) x 25.6'' ( 65cm ), and the capacity is 136L, which can hold 3 - 4 loads of laundry. The capacity of each compartment is 68L, and they both can hold 1.5 - 2 loads respectively.

Mudroom-laundry combo

Mudroom laundry is a high-traffic zone. Use a steel-frame canvas, resin-wicker, or heavy synthetic hamper with washable bags. Avoid untreated natural fiber baskets if the space handles wet boots, rain jackets, pool towels, or sports gear. Add a peg rail or hook strip above or beside the hamper for damp items.

If the room has a bench, plan the hamper so it does not block shoe storage or the path from the garage. We often see mudroom hampers work best at the end of a cabinet run or under an open counter bay, not directly in front of the washer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Second-floor laundry

Upstairs laundry is convenient, but the hamper needs to be easy to control. Heavy woven baskets without good handles are a poor choice if laundry ever moves up or down stairs. Removable bags are safer than carrying a rigid overloaded hamper against your body.

If the laundry room is upstairs, we also care about spill planning. A hamper is not plumbing, but wet textiles can still drip onto flooring. Use washable liners, avoid overfilling, and do not store wet towels in closed natural-fiber hampers on wood flooring. Moisture-resistant flooring below the laundry zone is a smart construction detail.

Bathroom-adjacent laundry

Humidity changes the recommendation. Use plastic, resin wicker, or a metal-frame hamper with synthetic washable liners. If you want a woven look, choose resin wicker rather than untreated seagrass or water hyacinth. Leave room around the hamper so air can move, and avoid pushing it tight against a damp wall or shower-adjacent cabinet.

Dimensions and Clearance: The Contractor Checks Before Buying

Before installing cabinetry or buying a premium hamper, we check the same things we check for built-ins: width, depth, height, door swing, service access, and walking clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the appliance doors. Front-load washer and dryer doors commonly need a wide swing zone. Top-load washers need overhead clearance. If a hamper sits under a shelf beside a top-loader, make sure the shelf and hamper do not interfere with loading.

Then check the walking path. A laundry room does not need to be huge, but the user should be able to stand, turn, and carry a load without stepping over the hamper. In tight areas, a hamper that projects 16 inches from the wall can feel very different from one that projects 20 inches.

Finally, check service access. Do not block dryer exhaust access, shutoff valves, cleanouts, electrical receptacles, or a utility sink base. A freestanding hamper can be moved, but if the daily layout blocks a dryer duct or water shutoff, the room is being used against its own maintenance needs.

Built-In Double Hampers During a Laundry Remodel

A freestanding double hamper is usually a $20 to $230 purchase. Building hamper storage into cabinetry changes the scope. Once you add cabinet boxes, pull-out hardware, finished panels, countertop coordination, and labor, that storage decision can add hundreds to several thousand dollars depending on materials and whether it is stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinetry.

For context, 2026 laundry remodel cost guides show a wide range. Many remodels fall around $5,000 to $15,000, with broader ranges from about $1,500 to $30,000 or more depending on scope. Other common ranges land around $6,000 to $17,000 with an $11,000 average, or $4,000 to $12,000 with about $7,000 typical for a compact 35-square-foot room. Laundry room additions can run roughly $8,000 to $30,000 because they may involve framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, flooring, and exterior work.

STO STO Laundry Hamper 2 Section, 100L Rolling Laundry Sorter Cart with Removable and Washable Liner Bag, Clothes Hamper with Wheels and Metal Handle for Laundry Room and Bedroom
  • [PATENTED DESIGN] 100L Capacity: With a generous capacity of 100L and dimensions of 23.1”L x 13.8”W x 29.1”H, this laundry basket offers ample room to accommodate a large amount of clothing. Despite its spaciousness, it is designed to occupy minimal floor space, making it perfect for fitting into small areas
  • Removable and Machine Washable Liner Bag: The removable canvas liner bag offers great convenience as you can easily take it directly to the laundry room. Made of durable canvas material, the liner bag is also washing machine-friendly, allowing you to effortlessly clean it whenever needed
  • Easy Sorting: This laundry basket comes equipped with 2 compartments that make sorting your laundry a breeze. The separate sections allow you to conveniently pre-sort your clothes into darks and lights, making laundry day easier and more efficient
  • Upgraded Wheels: The laundry cart now features larger, high-quality multi-directional wheels (2 lockable) for an even smoother glide. The enhanced wheels ensure effortless movement from room to room, while the improved locking mechanism provides secure stability when you need it. Experience a new level of convenience with our upgraded rolling casters, designed for superior ease of use and durability
  • Steel-frame Structure: The laundry basket boasts a sturdy steel frame design that enhances its overall durability and robustness. The steel frame is coated with a rust-resistant powder finish, ensuring long-lasting sturdiness and reliability

If we are planning a dedicated hamper bay, we size it around real products, then leave tolerance for replacement later. A cabinet opening that fits only one discontinued basket is bad planning. Leave a few inches of width and depth where possible, and use removable bins or bags that can be cleaned. Cabinet-grade beauty is not worth much if wet towels sit in an unvented box.

For pull-out hampers, use vented fronts, removable bins, and hardware rated for the loaded weight. A full double pull-out can carry more weight than people expect. Towels, jeans, and sweatshirts add up quickly. Cheap slides can sag, rack, or tear out of the cabinet side if the load is too heavy.

Safety, Moisture, and Code Notes

A hamper does not usually require a permit. Buying a freestanding sorter is normal homeowner work. The safety issues come from what the hamper blocks and what kind of remodel surrounds it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never crowd a dryer exhaust route for the sake of storage. Dryer ducts need to remain accessible for cleaning and maintenance, and exhaust systems must be installed according to applicable residential code requirements and manufacturer instructions. A hamper should also stay clear of electrical receptacles, appliance cords, gas shutoffs where present, water shutoff valves, utility sinks, and floor drains.

If you are adding built-in cabinetry, relocating appliances, moving plumbing, changing electrical circuits, adding a sink, or altering ventilation, that is no longer a simple storage purchase. Depending on your jurisdiction, permits and inspections may apply. Laundry areas often involve water, electricity, dryer exhaust, and sometimes gas in a compact space. Treat those systems with respect.

Moisture control matters even when no permit is involved. Lidded hampers and natural woven baskets can trap odor and moisture. Wet towels, gym clothes, cleaning rags, and swimsuits should dry before they sit in an enclosed hamper. If your laundry room smells musty, a prettier hamper will not fix the problem. You need airflow, cleanable materials, and better habits around wet textiles.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is appropriate for most freestanding hamper upgrades

Most homeowners can choose and place a freestanding double hamper without hiring anyone. Expect 15 to 30 minutes to measure, tape out the footprint, and test doors. Assembly, if required, usually takes 10 to 45 minutes with basic hand tools. Budget $20 to $230 depending on the style and durability you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY also makes sense for adding simple hooks, a wall-mounted drying rail, adhesive labels, or a washable mat under the hamper. If you are fastening into drywall, use appropriate anchors or hit studs. A wet towel rail carries more weight than a decorative hook holding one robe.

Hire a pro when storage touches cabinets, utilities, or layout changes

Bring in a contractor, cabinet installer, plumber, or electrician when the hamper becomes part of a built-in system or when utilities move. That includes pull-out hamper cabinets, new laundry counters, appliance relocation, added receptacles, sink work, dryer vent rerouting, gas line changes, or flooring repair after past leaks.

A pro is also worth considering when the laundry room is being remodeled anyway. Planning hamper storage during framing or cabinet layout is much cheaper than trying to force it in after counters, fillers, and appliance clearances are fixed.

Our Practical Shortlist

If a homeowner asked us what to buy without overcomplicating it, we would narrow the choice this way.

For a rental or kids’ room, choose a $20 to $40 collapsible double hamper with handles and two compartments. Expect a shorter lifespan, but enjoy the flexibility.

For a normal family laundry room, choose a 120- to 160-liter open-top double hamper with two removable washable bags. Spend roughly $45 to $120. Prioritize bag quality over a decorative lid.

For a mudroom, choose resin wicker over steel or a steel-frame canvas sorter. Spend roughly $70 to $230. Make sure the liner can be washed and the frame can tolerate daily traffic.

For a visible bedroom, hallway, or finished laundry room, choose a lidded woven or framed fabric unit in the $60 to $200 range, but only if the room is dry and the hamper has adequate ventilation.

For a remodel, either plan a freestanding hamper bay beside the folding counter or design a vented pull-out with removable bins. Do not put the hamper directly in front of appliances, shutoffs, dryer exhaust access, or the utility sink.

Final Buying Checklist

Before you order, confirm these details:

  • Total capacity: 75 to 90 liters for compact use, 120 to 160 liters for family use.
  • Footprint: tape the width and depth on the floor before buying.
  • Door clearance: test washer, dryer, closet, cabinet, and room doors.
  • Bag design: two removable washable bags are best for most homes.
  • Material: choose moisture-tolerant materials for bathrooms, mudrooms, and damp climates.
  • Ventilation: avoid sealed lids for wet towels and workout clothes.
  • Handles or wheels: match the carry route, especially in upstairs laundry areas.
  • Service access: keep dryer exhaust, valves, outlets, and sinks reachable.

The best double laundry hamper is the one that makes sorting automatic without making the room harder to use. Measure first, buy for the moisture level, and place it where laundry naturally lands. That small storage decision can make a $40 hamper feel smarter than a $200 one, and it can keep a $15,000 laundry remodel from being undermined by one bad daily-use detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size double laundry hamper is best for a family?

Most families should look for a double hamper with at least 120 liters of total capacity. A 140- to 160-liter model is usually better for towels, kids’ clothes, school uniforms, and bulky items.

Are lidded double hampers a good idea?

Lidded hampers are useful in bedrooms and hallways because they hide laundry, but they are not ideal for wet towels or workout clothes. If you choose a lid, make sure the hamper has ventilation and washable liners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best material for a double laundry hamper in a damp room?

Plastic, resin wicker, metal-frame canvas, and washable synthetic liners are the safest choices for damp rooms. Untreated rattan, seagrass, and water hyacinth can hold moisture and are harder to clean.

How much should I spend on a double laundry hamper?

In 2026, budget double hampers usually cost $20 to $40, midrange models cost $45 to $90, and premium framed or canvas sorters often cost $100 to $230 or more.

Can I build a double hamper into laundry room cabinets?

Yes, but use vented pull-outs and removable bins or bags. Built-in hamper storage can add hundreds to several thousand dollars to a cabinetry project depending on hardware, cabinet quality, and labor.

Where should a double hamper go in a laundry room?

Place it where clothes naturally land, usually near the entry or folding zone. Do not block washer or dryer doors, the lint filter, dryer exhaust access, water shutoffs, outlets, or the utility sink.
