There is no reliable universal installed price for hempcrete. Published estimates range from $75 to $180 per square foot, but they describe different wall specifications and inclusions, so they should not be averaged or treated as a local quote. The most useful way to estimate your project is to define the wall assembly and quote scope first, then compare itemized bids for the same work.

What hempcrete costs—and why the estimates differ

Hempcrete, also called hemp-lime or hemp masonry, combines hemp hurd, a lime-based binder and water. It is a non-structural insulating material: the wall assembly still needs a structural frame. That distinction matters when reading a price. A number for a hempcrete wall might include the frame, only the installed hemp-lime layer, or a broader building cost; those are not interchangeable figures.

Two secondary U.S.-context guides illustrate the range. ScienceInsights reported $100–$180 per square foot for a finished wall including the structural frame in 2026. Well Built Florida reported $75–$180 per square foot for an installed wall in 2025, assuming 6–8-inch walls, standard framing and no interior finishes. Their methods and scopes are not consistent enough to create a meaningful average. Treat both as dated published estimates, not as a price schedule or prediction for a particular location.

Published figure What it covers How to interpret it
$100–$180 per square foot; ScienceInsights, 2026 Finished wall, including structural frame; U.S. context A secondary estimate. The guide’s methodology is not established as comparable to the other estimate.
$75–$180 per square foot; Well Built Florida, 2025 Installed wall under stated assumptions: 6–8-inch thickness, standard framing and interior finishes excluded A secondary estimate with a different stated scope; do not treat it as an all-in finished-wall price.
$3.50–$11.66 per square foot; Magwood, as reported in Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, 2025 Material-related estimate for an R-28 hempcrete wall Not an installed price. Labor, framing and other scope cannot be assumed included.
$133 per square foot; case summarized in Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, 2025 A reported 3,400-square-foot dwelling A dwelling-level figure, not a hempcrete wall rate. It should not be compared directly with wall-area estimates.

The Australian government’s YourHome guidance gives no universal current rate. It says in-situ cost varies by builder and is usually similar to a well-insulated brick veneer wall in the Australian context. That comparison is geographically specific; it does not establish a U.S. price or a rate for another country.

Make sure the price is for the area you mean

“Per square foot” can refer to wall area, floor area or the total area used in a whole-project calculation. A wall estimate is not directly comparable to a dwelling figure unless the denominator and included work are clear. Before using a published rate or contractor bid, ask what the square footage measures and whether openings, corners, gables or other wall details are included in the measured area.

Likewise, “installed” does not automatically mean “finished” or “complete.” One estimate may include a frame; another may exclude interior finishes. A material-only figure may omit placing the mix, equipment, delivery and all finishing work. Get the contractor to list what the quoted number covers and what it leaves out rather than assuming that familiar labels have a standard definition.

What drives the installed price?

Hurd availability and delivery distance

Hemp hurd is bulky, so local availability and transport can affect the delivered cost. A peer-reviewed review identifies raw-hemp supply and market fluctuation as cost factors, while an industry guide also discusses shipping feedstock as part of installed cost. A quote should identify the material source, freight and any allowance for waste rather than presenting a delivered material price without its assumptions.

Binder formulation and quantity

The lime-based binder is a core ingredient, and binder type and quality affect cost. A dedicated lime-and-pozzolanic binder product exists for hemp-lime biocomposites, but that does not mean conventional lime products are interchangeable. Ask which binder the proposed system specifies, how much is allowed, what coverage the supplier expects, and whether the delivered price includes shipping. Confirm compatibility with the system supplier rather than substituting products on price alone.

Wall thickness and assembly specification

A thicker hemp-lime layer uses more material, so a price comparison is useful only when the wall thickness and assembly are alike. The Well Built Florida estimate, for example, is tied to 6–8-inch walls; it is not a general rate for any thickness. Ask bidders to state the specified thickness and describe the wall assembly they priced so that a lower number is not simply pricing less material or a different scope.

Installation method and labor

In-situ hemp-lime is installed as a damp mix around a structural timber frame. YourHome describes this work as slower and slightly more labor intensive than some alternatives. The peer-reviewed review also identifies labor and construction method as cost factors, and YourHome notes that actual prices vary from builder to builder. The installer’s experience, labor assumptions and job conditions therefore belong in the bid, not just the cost of hurd and binder.

Frame, equipment, permits and finishes

Because hempcrete is non-structural, framing remains part of the wall assembly. Verify whether the quote covers the frame, as well as mixing or formwork equipment, freight, permits, engineering or submittals, and interior and exterior finishes. These items can account for apparent differences between published estimates or contractor proposals even when the hemp-lime portion is similar.

In-situ hemp-lime or prefabricated components?

Site-mixed work and prefabricated blocks or panels change how a project is built, but the available evidence does not establish that one option always costs less overall. Panelised components can reduce construction time; that is a schedule benefit, not proof of a lower installed price. Compare both alternatives against the same wall specification and scope.

In-situ hemp-lime Damp mix is installed around a structural timber frame; the work is slower and somewhat more labor intensive. Hurd and binder, mixing, formwork, placement labor, equipment, delivery, drying schedule and finishes.
Prefabricated blocks or panels These products are available; panelised construction can reduce construction time. A like-for-like cost advantage is not established. Component supply, freight, installation labor, required frame, mortar or render, and finish scope.
Different binder or supplier Binder type and quality influence cost; specialty hemp-lime binders are a product category. Compatibility, specified quantity, expected coverage and delivered price.

How to get a useful hempcrete quote

Ask each contractor or supplier to price the same written scope. This makes the differences visible and gives you a way to check whether a seemingly cheaper proposal excludes important work. If a contractor cannot yet price an item, ask them to mark it as an allowance or exclusion rather than silently leaving it ambiguous.

  1. Identify the project basis. State the project location and currency, and say whether you want a price per wall square foot, per floor square foot or for the whole project.
  2. Define the wall. Provide the wall area and thickness, and identify the intended assembly. Ask bidders to use the same area basis and specification.
  3. Name the system. Specify whether the proposal is for site-mixed hemp-lime, blocks or panels. For a proposed binder, ask for the product specification and compatibility confirmation.
  4. Separate structural work. Require a clear statement about whether the frame is included, what it consists of and which structural or engineering items are outside the proposal.
  5. Request material quantities and labor. Ask for hurd and binder specifications or quantities, placement labor, equipment, formwork or panel installation, and any stated waste allowance.
  6. Make logistics visible. Have the bid show freight, delivery assumptions and equipment costs rather than burying them in a single wall rate.
  7. Set the finish boundary. List interior and exterior renders, other finishes and any work that is excluded. Do not assume that “finished wall” means the same thing from one bidder to another.
  8. Record schedule and approvals. Ask for drying or schedule assumptions and identify permits, engineering and submittals included in the price.
  9. Compare exclusions and allowances. Put explicit exclusions beside each bid, then resolve differences before selecting a proposal. A missing price is not evidence that the item is included.

How to judge published prices without mistaking them for a quote

Use published figures as context, not as a substitute for local bids. Before relying on any number, check five things: its publication year, geography, measured area, wall thickness and included work. If one figure describes material for an R-28 wall and another describes a finished wall with framing, the difference does not show that one source is wrong; they price different things.

The $133-per-square-foot dwelling case reported by Innovative Infrastructure Solutions is especially easy to misuse. Its denominator is a 3,400-square-foot dwelling, not a measured area of hempcrete wall. Without a breakdown that isolates the wall assembly, it cannot establish a wall installation rate. Similarly, a materials estimate cannot be transformed into an installed figure by assuming labor or frame costs that the source does not provide.

YourHome’s brick-veneer comparison can help Australian readers place in-situ work in a local building context, but it is not a current numerical price and should not be exported as a comparison for other markets. For a project-specific decision, a builder familiar with the local method and a written, itemized scope are more useful than a headline number from a different country or year.

What is still needed for a project-specific number?

A reliable installed price for a particular project depends on its location, design, wall specification and bid scope. The published figures above do not form a comparable dataset of current local installed bids, and they do not establish a universal national average. To obtain a decision-ready estimate, share drawings or a clear wall schedule with local contractors and suppliers, request the same scope from each, and resolve exclusions before comparing totals.
