A magnetic window cleaner uses a pair of magnet-linked cleaning units: you move the one indoors, and it guides the other across the outside face of the glass. Whether it will stay attached depends on the exact model and the full thickness and construction of your window. Check the model’s manual against your window before use, and secure the safety cord before placing the exterior half.
How a magnetic window cleaner works
The tool has an inner unit and an outer unit. Separate them, place one against each face of the pane, then move the inside handle. Magnetic attraction through the glass keeps the exterior unit aligned and moving with it.
Cleaning pads or sponges loosen dirt; some models also have a rubber blade to move water off the glass. A cord attached to the exterior unit is intended to catch it if the magnetic connection is lost. The manuals describe different permitted thicknesses because the magnetic force has to work across the distance and materials between the units: a grip that is too weak may let the outside half detach, while an overly strong grip can make the tool difficult to move on thinner glass.
Which windows will it fit?
There is no universal thickness range for magnetic cleaners. Use the exact model’s manual, including its stated glazing type, rather than relying on a broad label such as “double glazing.” A window assembly may have substantially more separation between its indoor and outdoor faces than the thickness of one pane. Measure what the manual specifies for the complete assembly; do not substitute one pane’s thickness if the instructions call for the total distance.

These are examples of separate model specifications and claims, not independently tested performance results or evidence that every unit in a product family has the same range. Confirm the exact model and instructions. An adjustment dial does not make a cleaner compatible with every thickness.
How to check compatibility before using one
- Identify the window construction and determine the measurement the cleaner’s manual asks for. Distinguish a single pane’s thickness from the total separation across the window assembly.
- Compare that measurement with the exact model’s stated range and glazing type. Do not infer compatibility from “double-glazed” or “multi-pane” alone.
- If the model is adjustable, set it only as its instructions direct. Stay within the supported range.
- If you cannot confidently establish the required measurement, or the manual does not cover your window construction, do not assume it will fit. Ask the manufacturer or choose another cleaning method.
- Try it on an accessible window as the manual directs, with the safety cord secured before placing or moving the outside unit.
Safety limits and practical cautions
- Secure the safety cord first. Attach it to your wrist or a secure point as the manual directs, before placing or moving the exterior half.
- Keep fingers clear of the magnets. The halves can snap together suddenly and pinch. Use a supplied separator for storage where instructed.
- Stay within the model’s range. Weak magnetic grip can allow the outside unit to detach; excessive grip can make it hard to move.
- Do not use it on damaged glass if the manual prohibits that use. Manuals reviewed include warnings against use on cracked or damaged glass.
- Wet the pads as directed. The Podazz manual instructs users to wet the cleaning pads; the reviewed instructions do not establish dry use as safe or effective.
Product manuals and a manufacturer product page provide model-specific instructions and ranges, not independent comparative testing of speed, streaking, durability, glass-damage rates or safety outcomes. They do not establish that magnetic cleaners are universally effective, safer than every alternative or suitable for all high-rise windows. Follow the exact instructions and do not rely on the exterior unit’s cord as a substitute for confirming fit.

What to compare when choosing a model
- Compatibility: Supported total thickness and glazing type for the exact model, including whether its range covers single-, double- or multi-pane glazing.
- Magnetic adjustment: Whether the magnet is fixed or adjustable, how the adjustment works and the range the manual supports.
- Safety provisions: Cord attachment directions, cord length if stated, pinch warnings and whether a separator is supplied.
- Cleaning parts: Pad, sponge and squeegee design, plus availability of replacements for that model. Baffect describes replacement sponges and squeegee strips; Mitclear lists pads and rubber blades. Confirm part compatibility with the maker before ordering.
- Instructions: How the maker says to measure, separate, place and move the halves, and any restrictions for the glass.
