National Park Service planning documents estimate that construction of President Trump’s proposed Triumphal Arch could take two to three years, with work scheduled year-round in two 10-hour shifts each day. That is a projected construction schedule—not confirmation that work has begun or a guaranteed completion date.
Will construction really run 20 hours a day?
That is the schedule described in NPS planning documents: two 10-hour shifts per day, year-round, for the duration of construction. The agency language, quoted by ABC News, says work “would occur year-round” in those shifts. The 20 hours refer to planned daily work coverage, not a claim that each worker would work 20 hours.

The schedule is prospective. The documents describe what construction could involve if the project advances; they do not establish that this schedule is underway.
How long could the arch take to build?
The NPS estimate is two to three years. It is a planning estimate, not a firm finish date. The proposed project is a 250-foot arch at Memorial Circle near Arlington Memorial Bridge, within the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

What construction work drives the estimate?
The agency’s projected sequence spans seven phases and includes substantial foundation, concrete, and finishing work. These are estimates and proposed methods, not completed construction results.
- Foundation: Plans describe driving the foundation system about 75 feet to bedrock. NPS estimates about 30 trucks moving 100 soil loads daily for months.
- Main structure: The primary concrete structure is projected to take around 10 months.
- Finishing: The proposed concrete structure would be clad in U.S.-sourced granite, followed by granite panels and other interior work.
The equipment list includes tower cranes reaching up to 320 feet, as well as concrete pumps, forklifts, and skid steers. These figures come from NPS planning documents reported by ABC News and The Associated Press; they describe anticipated scale, not actual equipment deployed.

What approvals and reviews remain relevant?
The project is a federal undertaking subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The NPS project page lists an assessment of effects and a draft programmatic agreement; it was updated August 12, 2026, and notes that the public-comment period closed July 30, 2026. Closing comments is a process milestone, not by itself permission to begin construction. See the NPS project page.

- Commission of Fine Arts: AP reported that the commission approved the design. Design approval does not itself equal construction authorization.
- National Capital Planning Commission: AP reported June 10 that NCPC sought more information on height, lighting, stormwater, traffic, and parking. ABC reported preliminary approval of site and building plans on July 9, with revisions and a later final-approval step anticipated then. These are dated accounts, not proof that every planning requirement is complete.
- Federal Aviation Administration: AP’s June 10 report said a full FAA aeronautical study was still to come.
- Legal challenge: AP reported that veterans and a historian had challenged the project. The cited accounts do not establish the final court status.
What does the preservation review say about the site?
In an August 28 account of a newer NPS report, AP said the agency found adverse effects to historic sites and sightlines, including the Lincoln Memorial–Memorial Bridge–Arlington House alignment. NPS also argued that “the same characteristics that make Memorial Circle sensitive from a preservation perspective are also the characteristics that make it the historically appropriate location for the undertaking.” That is the agency’s rationale for the proposed site, alongside its finding of adverse effects.
As of the dated information described in these reports, the construction start and final court status are not established. A projected two-to-three-year schedule should therefore not be read as a countdown to completion.
