There is no single current federal estimate for how long ovens last. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 estimates are 16.8 years for electric cooking products and 14.5 years for gas cooking products, but those categories include more than ovens. Older DOE estimates focused specifically on conventional ovens: 15 years for electric and 17 years for gas. These figures are averages, not deadlines or predictions for an individual appliance.
How long does an oven last?
The best answer depends on which estimate you use and what it counts. DOE defines equipment lifetime as the age at which equipment is retired from service. Its 2024 estimates cover cooking-product categories, while its oven-only figures are from a 2015 analysis using 2012 industry data.
| Estimate | Product scope | Evidence basis |
|---|---|---|
| 16.8 years, electric | All electric cooking products, not ovens alone | DOE, 2024; estimated using AHAM category detail and market shares. DOE cooking-products rule |
| 14.5 years, gas | All gas cooking products, not ovens alone | DOE, 2024; estimated using AHAM category detail and market shares. DOE cooking-products rule |
| 15 years, electric | Conventional electric ovens | DOE, 2015 analysis using Appliance Magazine Market Insight 2012 data; historical oven-specific estimate. DOE residential ovens analysis |
| 17 years, gas | Conventional gas ovens | DOE, 2015 analysis using Appliance Magazine Market Insight 2012 data; historical oven-specific estimate. DOE residential ovens analysis |
These figures should not be treated as interchangeable: they differ in publication date, product scope, and evidence basis. An oven may need attention before an average age—or remain serviceable beyond it—depending on its condition and whether a repair makes sense.
How long should an electric oven last?
The DOE’s older oven-specific analysis estimated 15 years for conventional electric ovens. The newer 2024 DOE figure of 16.8 years applies to electric cooking products as a whole, not just ovens, so it is not a direct update to the oven-only number.

Do gas ovens last longer than electric ovens?
The available figures do not establish that one fuel type reliably lasts longer. The historical oven-only estimates put conventional gas ovens at 17 years and conventional electric ovens at 15 years, but those figures rely on 2012 industry data. The newer DOE estimates go the other way—14.5 years for gas cooking products and 16.8 for electric cooking products—but include broader product categories. Neither comparison is a like-for-like prediction for a particular oven.
What affects an oven’s useful life?
Age is only one part of the decision. The appliance’s condition, the fault, repairability, repair quote, and cost of a suitable replacement all matter. A range survey is useful context but not oven-specific: Consumer Reports reported that about 25 percent of ranges were expected to develop problems or break within five years, based on its 2018 member survey of more than 43,000 new ranges purchased from 2008 to 2018. The same article reported 2 percent of ranges replaced because of reliability issues. These are range results, not measurements of ovens alone. Consumer Reports’ range reliability article

Should I repair or replace my oven?
Use the diagnosis and the economics of your specific appliance rather than a fixed age cutoff or percentage rule. Consumer Reports advises weighing the appliance’s age and repair cost against the price of a new one; for wall ovens, the original price is also relevant. Consumer Reports’ wall-oven repair guide
- Identify the appliance and symptom. Find the model number and note what is failing and when it occurs.
- Check warranty and manufacturer support. Review the owner’s manual and any applicable warranty before authorizing work.
- Get a qualified diagnosis and written quote. This is particularly important for heating problems, control-panel faults, or other complex repairs.
- Compare total costs. Compare the quote with a suitable replacement’s price, including installation where applicable.
- Factor in fit and value. Consider whether the current oven otherwise meets your household’s needs and whether the model is worth keeping.
Consumer Reports’ 2023 range repair guide, based on 2021 survey data, reported a $206 median parts-and-labor cost among respondents who proceeded with a broken-range repair. It reported $191 for gas ranges, $212 for electric ranges, and $290 for pro-style ranges. These are historical survey figures for ranges, not current quotes or standard prices for wall-oven repairs. How can I make an oven last longer?
Follow the care instructions for your specific model. The available manufacturer guidance supports safe, model-specific cleaning practices; it does not quantify how many years a maintenance action adds to an oven’s life.
- Before using self-clean, consult the manual for your model. Whirlpool advises ventilating the kitchen, keeping vents unobstructed, and removing racks and other items as directed for the applicable cycle. Whirlpool owner’s manual (2019)
- Do not clean, rub, damage, or move the door gasket. Whirlpool notes that the gasket is essential for a good seal.
- Check whether racks can remain during self-clean. GE advises consulting the model’s manual and warns that foil or silicone mats left inside during self-clean may damage the appliance. GE Appliances self-clean tips
- Choose cleaning methods suited to the oven’s technology and the soil level. Whirlpool suggests a non-scratch sponge or plastic scraper for some cleaning tasks. Whirlpool cleaning and maintenance guidance
Do not assume that frequent self-clean cycles extend an oven’s life. The manufacturer sources describe precautions and cleaning methods, but do not establish that self-cleaning lengthens or shortens service life. For a suspected gas leak, electrical fault, damaged cord, or complex repair, contact the appliance maker or a qualified professional rather than attempting the repair yourself.
