Start by checking moisture: extension guidance commonly recommends burning wood at about 20% moisture or less for efficient indoor use. Then compare local species, order a clearly defined quantity, and store the wood where it can dry without being sealed in.
What is the best wood for firewood?
There is no universal best species. Choose wood that is dry enough for your appliance, then weigh heat per cord, ease of splitting, sparking, smoke, coaling, fragrance, and local availability. A plentiful local species that is properly seasoned may be a more practical choice than a highly rated species that is wet or difficult to obtain.
Why density matters more by the cord
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says firewood species have approximately the same energy per pound at equal moisture content—about 7,000 Btu per pound for wood at 20% moisture or air-seasoned for at least one year. A cord contains more pounds of dense wood than of lighter wood, so density changes the energy in a cord. That is why species comparisons are more useful by volume when buying a cord, while dryness remains the first screen. Iowa State Extension’s firewood energy guidance explains this distinction.
Use regional values as comparisons, not guarantees
Published heat-per-cord figures are tied to particular regions and species groupings. Illinois Extension lists 24.4 million Btu per cord for red/black oak and 26.5 million Btu per cord for white/bur oak. In a 2024 Kansas State University Extension report, Kansas Forest Service forester Dave Bruton gives 25 million BTU for red, bur, and post oak in the Kansas context. These figures come from different sources and regional contexts; they do not establish one universal ranking. Illinois Extension’s firewood guide and Kansas State University Extension’s firewood guidance provide their respective comparisons.

Match the wood to the appliance and setting
Follow the stove or fireplace manufacturer’s instructions for acceptable fuel. For an open fireplace, sparking is a particular concern: Bruton’s species-specific warning about Osage orange is, “do not use in an open fireplace,” because it tends to spark. Do not treat that warning as a general statement about all appliances or all wood species.
How can I tell if firewood is seasoned and okay to burn?
Use a moisture meter rather than relying on a seller’s “seasoned” label or appearance alone. A commonly recommended target for efficient indoor burning is about 20% moisture or less, but the appliance maker’s instructions take precedence. Wet wood uses energy to evaporate water, produces more smoke, and can contribute to creosote deposits. UNH Extension’s guide to checking firewood recommends testing with a meter.

Check the wood correctly
- Split a log, then press the meter’s probes into the freshly split face. Testing only the outside of a log can give a misleading reading.
- Check several pieces from different parts of the pile. One dry piece does not establish that the whole delivery is ready to burn.
- Use the readings alongside visual clues, not in place of them. Cracks at the ends, lower weight, and a ringing sound when pieces are knocked together may suggest dryness, but none is definitive.
- Compare the result with your appliance manufacturer’s fuel guidance before burning.
“Seasoned” does not promise a fixed drying time. Illinois Extension says six to nine months is common; UNH Extension gives six to eight months in its buying guidance and notes that drying varies with species. These are general estimates, not guarantees: verify the delivered wood’s moisture instead of assuming a certain number of months means it is ready. Kiln-dried and air-seasoned wood are different drying routes, so follow the stove’s fuel instructions either way. Illinois Extension and UNH Extension’s drying guidance discuss seasoning and drying.

- Which species are included? If it is a mix, what are the species?
- How much wood is included, and how is the quantity measured?
- What is the log length, and is the wood split?
- What is the moisture level, and how was it measured?
- When was the wood cut and split, and how has it been stored?
- What is the delivery location, and are delivery and stacking included?
Confirm the measure
A standard cord is 128 cubic feet of neatly stacked wood and air, according to UNH Extension. If a seller quotes a different measure, such as a partial load or a loosely described pile, ask exactly what volume you will receive rather than assuming it equals a cord. State the quantity and measure in your order. UNH Extension’s buying guide explains the cord and buying questions.
Buy early when you can
Wood may be sold as “seasoned” without being dry enough for your use. Ask when it was cut and split and how it was stored, then check moisture when it arrives. Cornell Cooperative Extension notes that green wood can have very high moisture and advises buying well before the heating season when possible. If the wood is not ready, allow time for it to dry before relying on it for indoor fires. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s firewood guidance covers buying and preparation.

How should you store firewood so it stays dry?
Store wood where air can move through the stack and rain can drain away. Choose a sunny spot with good airflow, raise the stack off the ground, and cover only the top. A cover wrapped tightly around the sides can trap moisture rather than help wood dry. Split wood dries faster than unsplit rounds, though the time needed still depends on species and conditions. UNH Extension’s buying guide and drying guidance describe storage practices.
Can you transport firewood from another area?
Check current rules before moving firewood across county or state boundaries. Firewood can carry forest pests, and restrictions depend on the jurisdiction. Consult the forestry or agriculture authority for the places you are traveling from and to; do not apply one state’s distance guidance or permit rules elsewhere. UF/IFAS Extension’s firewood advice is specific to Florida and should be read in that local context. UF/IFAS Extension’s Florida guidance explains the pest-movement concern.
