Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBoth aster and morning glory are commonly named as September birth flowers, though some lists name only aster. Choose aster for a daisy-like flower associated with fall and a perennial garden; choose morning glory for trumpet-shaped blooms on a climbing vine. Birth-flower pairings and their meanings are cultural traditions, not official botanical designations.
Why September has two birth flowers
The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists aster and morning glory as September’s pair, and Maine’s agriculture department also identifies aster as a September birth flower. A 2022 West Virginia University Extension floriography handout lists aster alone. There is no single authoritative list, so it is most accurate to say both flowers are commonly associated with September, rather than to call either pairing official.
What the flowers symbolize
Meanings vary by reference and are best treated as traditional associations, not universal rules. The Old Farmer’s Almanac associates asters with love, wisdom, patience, and beauty; it associates morning glory with love, including undying or unrequited love. West Virginia University Extension’s 2022 handout gives aster the characteristic “Love.”
For a birthday gift or tattoo, either flower can work as a September motif. Aster offers a fall-flower association and a range of traditional meanings; morning glory may suit someone drawn to its climbing form or its association with enduring love. You can also choose based on the person’s favorite flower or colors rather than treating symbolism as a fixed code.

How the two flowers differ
| Choice | Look and season | Garden fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aster, especially New England aster | Daisy-like flowers in late summer and fall. Clemson Extension reports New England aster blooms for six weeks or longer. | A perennial for borders or pollinator plantings; Clemson recommends sun to part shade and moist to well-drained soil. | “Aster” covers many species and common names. Clemson’s USDA zones 4–8b guidance applies to New England aster, not every aster. |
| Morning glory | Trumpet-shaped flowers on a climbing vine; blooms open in the morning and fade by evening. | A vigorous vine for a support or structure. Illinois Extension lists a height of 10–20 feet and describes it as easy to grow from seed. | It can reseed heavily. Some morning-glory species are considered invasive in some locations, so check local regulations and planting guidance first. |
Which September flower should you choose?
Choose aster for a fall garden or perennial border
If you want flowers that return as part of a perennial planting and bloom into fall, New England aster is a useful species to consider. Clemson Extension describes it as native to the eastern half of the United States and Canada, with plants typically 3 to 6 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide. Its nectar supports bees and butterflies, including monarchs, while its seeds feed songbirds and small animals.
Choose morning glory for height and a climbing display
If you want a vine to cover a trellis or other structure, morning glory is the more natural fit. Its flowers open in the morning and fade by evening, and the plant can grow quickly enough to cover supports. Plan for its vigorous growth and heavy reseeding rather than expecting a vine that stays neatly in place.

Choose by meaning for a gift or tattoo
For either use, the two flowers provide different visual motifs: aster’s daisy-like flower versus morning glory’s trumpet-shaped bloom and climbing stems. Their symbolic meanings are traditions cited by particular references, not a universal birth-flower code. If the recipient has a personal connection to one flower, that is a more dependable guide than assuming one meaning applies to everyone.

New England aster
Clemson Extension’s guidance for New England aster calls for sun to part shade and moist to well-drained soil. Water regularly until established and during dry spells afterward. Pinching growing tips in spring can encourage bushier growth; stop pinching in July to preserve fall bloom. The plant can self-seed and may be susceptible to powdery mildew.

For asters more generally, UW Extension recommends full sun or part shade, moist well-drained soil, spring planting, and spacing that allows good air circulation. It also recommends staking tall plants and dividing clumps every two or three years in spring. These broad recommendations do not replace species- or cultivar-specific care guidance.
Morning glory
Illinois Extension says morning glory may be started indoors or sown directly in the garden; soaking seeds for 24 hours can help them germinate quickly. ‘Heavenly Blue’ is one cultivar named by the extension source. Before planting seeds, check local guidance: the Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that some species are considered invasive weeds in some locations and advises checking local regulations.
