In Langegg, Austria, Gangoly & Kristiner Architects transformed an old winegrower’s house into a relaxed holiday retreat designed to welcome guests. The 140 m² renovation, completed in 2024, takes its character from muted color, tactile materials and a sequence of distinct spaces rather than a conspicuous display of finishes.

How was the old winegrower’s house reimagined?

The project recasts the existing house as a countryside retreat for holidays and gatherings. Rather than describe a room-by-room construction process, the architects’ account focuses on how the interiors feel and connect: spatial sequences are shaped through shifts in color and material.

“A focus on spatial aspects remains a central theme in our interior design work, too,” the project architects write. That emphasis makes the transition between rooms part of the design, not just the backdrop for individual furnishings.

What colors and materials define the interior?

The starting point was an atmospheric brief: no white, but soft, muted colors with subtle variation. Old linen and wood introduce texture and help connect the spaces. The palette is restrained, but the surfaces and their placement keep the rooms from feeling uniform.

Historic elements also contribute to the interior’s identity. In the kitchen, an old vaulted brick ceiling sets the tone, while a stone-clad niche in another space serves as a washbasin. These features are described as part of the project’s design, not as a detailed account of the building’s structure or renovation methods.

How do crafted details shape the rooms?

Bedroom

A paneled wall frames the bed, giving the sleeping area a defined focal point within the subdued palette.

Kitchen and washbasin

The kitchen’s vaulted brick ceiling gives the room a distinct atmosphere. A stone-clad niche provides a practical place for a washbasin while making the material itself a visible feature.

Gallery

A tall music cabinet acts as a screen behind which a sofa creates a tucked-away place to doze. The arrangement uses furniture to shape a more private resting spot within the gallery.

Bathroom and dining room

Grooved, double-lacquered fronts show how the architects draw on craftsmanship to develop detail. The project account identifies these finishes in the bathroom and dining room but does not specify products or technical performance.
