The guidance below focuses on the United States; requirements depend on the jurisdiction where you plan to practice.
1. Choose an education route with your likely career path in mind
There is no single degree required everywhere to become an architect in the United States. Many—but not all—jurisdictions require a degree from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited program for initial licensure. Some jurisdictions allow other education and experience routes, which may require additional experience. Check the rules where you intend to practice before choosing a degree path. Common professional-degree routes
- Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.): commonly a five-year undergraduate professional degree.
- Master of Architecture (M.Arch.): often a two-year graduate degree after a pre-professional architecture degree, or three years after an undergraduate degree in another subject. The exact length depends on the program.
- Doctor of Architecture (D.Arch.): another NAAB-accredited professional degree type; check individual program details and how the degree fits your goals.
A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in architecture is not by itself a NAAB-accredited professional degree. It may be part of a route that requires further study or experience. Confirm the exact degree and program, not just the university’s name.

2. Check the architecture program’s accreditation
Institutional accreditation and NAAB accreditation are different. A university may be institutionally accredited while a particular architecture program is not accredited by NAAB. Because many licensing jurisdictions require a NAAB-accredited degree for initial licensure, accreditation can affect your options after graduation.

Look up the specific program in NAAB’s accredited-program directory and confirm its current status with the school. Ask how a transfer, a change of major, or a plan to earn a later graduate degree would affect your eligibility under the rules of your intended jurisdiction. 3. Expect to develop both design judgment and technical skills
Architecture school involves creative work, but design is only one part of preparing to practice. In a March 4, 2025 summary of RAND’s Building Impact study, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported that students and practitioners called for stronger technical skills and more hands-on experience. The summary also identified challenges around the transition from school to practice, accessibility, and affordability. The study drew on surveys and interviews with students, faculty, and practicing professionals; its findings do not establish that every school has the same gaps. Read AIA’s summary of the study.

When comparing programs, ask how students connect design projects with technical work and real-world experience. Look for opportunities such as hands-on coursework, firm exposure, mentorship, internships, or co-op placements, and ask how the program supports students as they move into practice.
4. Plan for several stages between school and licensure
In the U.S., education is one part of a professional path that also includes documented experience and examinations. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) describes the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) as a framework for gaining and recording professional experience. AXP organizes experience across six areas:

NCARB also describes the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 5.0 as having six divisions. Requirements and eligibility depend on the jurisdiction, so use NCARB’s jurisdiction-specific licensing requirements tool and speak with an advisor while you are still in school. NCARB’s student resources include free practice exams and information about volunteer licensing advisors. These resources help with planning; they do not promise a particular timeline to licensure.

Build a broad foundation
A joint guide from NCARB, AIA, AIAS, NAAB, ACSA, and NOMA suggests that high-school students exploring architecture consider studio art, drafting or technical drawing, photography, and 3-D modeling. It also encourages portfolio development, visits to architecture firms, and research into accreditation and scholarships. - Total cost after grants, scholarships, and other aid
- Admission expectations, including any portfolio requirements
- Access to technical and hands-on learning, firm exposure, mentorship, and work placements
- Fit with the licensing rules where you may want to practice
Budget from school-specific information
There is no reliable single tuition or supplies figure for architecture students: costs and equipment expectations vary by school. Check each program’s current cost-of-attendance and scholarship information. Ask which expenses are included or optional, such as equipment, printing, model-making materials, and access to workshops or facilities. Follow the school’s supply list before buying drafting tools or other equipment.
