High Cool vs. Low Cool on an Air Conditioner: What’s the Difference?

High Cool runs cooling with a higher fan speed; Low Cool uses a lower speed. Learn what the labels mean, how Fan-only differs, and why your model’s manual matters.

High Cool and Low Cool both cool the room; the difference is the fan speed used while cooling. On the room air conditioners described in the cited manuals, High Cool runs the fan at high speed and Low Cool runs it at low speed. High Fan and Low Fan, by contrast, circulate air without cooling on those models.

What High Cool and Low Cool mean

“Cool” indicates that the air conditioner is operating in cooling mode. “High” and “Low” distinguish the fan speed used during that cooling operation. Panasonic’s CW-C53GK manual describes High Cool and Low Cool as cooling with different fan speeds, and defines High Cool as high-speed fan operation and Low Cool as low-speed fan operation. See the Panasonic manual.

Setting What it does on the cited models When it may suit you
High Cool Runs cooling with the fan at high speed. When you prefer the higher fan-speed setting; use the guidance for your specific unit.
Low Cool Runs cooling with the fan at low speed. When you prefer a lower fan-speed setting. GE recommends Low Cool for quieter or nighttime cooling on the model described in its manual.
High Fan / Low Fan Circulates air without cooling on the cited models. When you want fan-only operation, not cooling.

The GE manual likewise says its High Cool, Medium Cool and Low Cool settings provide cooling at different fan speeds. Its quieter-operation advice is specific to the model and instructions described there. See the GE manual.

Which setting should you choose?

  • Choose Low Cool if you want the lower fan-speed option. GE specifically recommends it for quieter or nighttime cooling on its described air conditioner.
  • Choose High Cool if you want the higher fan-speed option, subject to your unit’s instructions.
  • Choose a Fan setting only when you want air circulation without cooling, as on the cited controls.

The manuals establish the difference in fan speed, not a universal difference in how quickly a room reaches its target temperature. They also do not quantify a noise difference, energy savings or cooling time, so those outcomes should not be assumed from the labels alone.

Fan speed is not the temperature setting

Fan speed controls how fast the air conditioner’s fan operates; the temperature control sets the desired temperature. Panasonic describes these as separate controls in its manual. Changing from High Cool to Low Cool therefore changes the fan-speed setting, not the thermostat target.

Why the labels can vary between units

These definitions come from particular room-air-conditioner manuals, not a universal rule for every air conditioner. Some newer controls separate the operating mode from fan speed: Samsung’s support page lists Cool and Fan functions alongside adjustable fan speeds, while Haier’s remote-controller manual treats cooling mode and fan speed as separate controls.
