A portable generator offers temporary power and flexibility; a home standby system is installed for a more integrated setup. There is no single generator size that suits every home.
Start with the loads you need to power
Before comparing generators, decide what needs to run at the same time during an outage. List essential appliances and circuits, including heating or cooling equipment, pumps, and other motor-driven loads. Their starting demand can be higher than their running demand, so a simple count of appliancesโor adding only their ordinary operating wattageโmay not capture the peak the system must handle.
For an initial estimate, Generacโs generator sizing tool asks about backup needs, heating, EV charging, and the largest motorโs starting amps. It is a manufacturerโs planning aid, not a universal sizing rule. A standby system needs a site-specific assessment of the loads and electrical setup.
Choose between portable and standby power

A household that only needs occasional power for plug-in essentials has different requirements from one seeking automatic backup for hard-wired circuits. Neither type is universally best. Fuel costs, runtime, storage, and availability vary; the available guidance does not establish a neutral cost comparison between fuel types or a full model-to-model comparison.

Plan the connection to household circuits
Portable generators
Extension cords can connect a portable generator to separate plug-in appliances when the cords and generator receptacles are appropriate for the loads. To supply household circuits through the panel, use a compatible, appropriately rated transfer switch or inlet arrangement. Ratings and compatibility depend on the generator, wiring, and equipment. Honda publishes model-specific transfer-switch guidance and says transfer switches and inlet boxes should be installed by a qualified electrician. Check the exact manuals and local requirements for receptacle, voltage, amperage, cord, inlet, and switch compatibility.
Never connect a generator directly to a household outlet. Use the proper transfer equipment for household wiring; an incorrect connection can create shock, electrocution, or fire hazards.

Standby systems
Standby planning involves the generator, transfer equipment, and the homeโs electrical and fuel systems. Capacity, load management, fuel supply, panel configuration, equipment compatibility, and applicable local electrical and fuel requirements can all affect the design. Generac recommends professional guidance for these site-specific decisions. Confirm requirements with qualified local professionals and relevant authorities before installation.

Portable generators produce lethal carbon monoxide (CO). The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to operate one outdoors at least 20 feet from the home or another building, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, vents, and other openings. Never operate it in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space. Open doors or windows do not make indoor operation safe. - Keep working battery-operated or battery-backup CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Alarms supplement safe generator placement; they do not make indoor operation safe.
- Follow the manufacturerโs instructions for operation, maintenance, and wet weather.
- Shut off the generator and let it cool before refueling.
- Store fuel outside the home according to the applicable instructions and local requirements.
In a January 2026 winter safety release, the CPSC estimated about 750 generator-associated CO deaths in the United States from 2012 through 2022. That figure covers the stated period; it is not an annual rate.

What to verify before installation or purchase
- Which appliances and circuits must operate together, including heating or cooling and motor-starting loads.
- Whether temporary portable power or an installed standby arrangement better fits the householdโs needs.
- For a portable unit, safe outdoor placement, fuel and refueling arrangements, model-specific output, and compatible connection equipment.
