January garden work depends on where you live and what the weather and soil are doing. In cold-winter areas, focus on winter protection, observation, and planning; in milder climates, January may be a planting month. Use the regional checklists below as examples, then confirm timing with your county Extension office and local conditions.
What should I do in my garden in January?
Start with three checks: whether the ground is frozen, workable, or waterlogged; whether plants are exposed to freezing weather, drying wind, or little rain; and whether your local calendar recommends planting or pruning a particular plant now. A month name or USDA hardiness zone alone cannot set a reliable schedule. Florida publishes separate calendars for North, Central, and South Florida, while Oregon State University cautions that its January calendar may not apply throughout Oregon. Find your county Extension office for local recommendations.
Cold-winter and Upper Midwest gardens
Check winter protection
- Inspect cages, wraps, and other protection, and repair anything displaced. Minnesota Extension advises keeping fencing at least 2 feet above the snow line and securing cage bottoms flush to the ground with landscape staples.
- Review deicing practices near turf. Minnesota Extension warns that accumulated deicing salt can damage lawns; fine fescues and tall fescue are more salt-tolerant turf species.
Plan and check seed supplies
- Sort seeds by type, age, and quantity before ordering. Consider a germination test for older seed, and check existing seed-starting supplies.
- Review the garden layout and note where plants or structures could add winter interest.
Look after houseplants
Dry indoor air can increase water loss. Check soil and water as needed; for moisture-loving houseplants, consider raising humidity.
Chicago and Great Lakes gardens
The Chicago Botanic Garden treats January primarily as a planning month for its stated USDA zones 5b and 6a. Its recommendations are local examples, not a schedule for every Great Lakes garden.

Protect soil and plants during winter weather
- Keep off lawns and garden beds during thaws to avoid compacting wet soil.
- Distribute snow rather than piling it onto plants, and keep treated snow away from beds. The Garden suggests sand as a possible alternative on slippery surfaces; use it carefully so it does not clog storm drains.
- Let ice melt naturally instead of striking icy branches. Gently sweep heavy snow from large evergreens with a soft broom.
- Clean holiday evergreen material can be reused as mulch over beds. Its open structure allows moisture through while insulating roots and crowns.
Prune selectively
Light pruning of deciduous trees and shrubs may be appropriate when weather permits. Remove storm-damaged branches promptly. Wait until late February or early March to prune fruit trees, according to the Garden’s calendar.
Adjust indoor plant care
Many houseplants grow more slowly in winter and need less water and little or no fertilizer. Watch for pests and avoid overwatering.

Oregon and Pacific Northwest gardens
Oregon State University Extension’s January calendar, published in December 2020 and reviewed in 2025, explicitly warns that its advice may not apply to every part of Oregon. Treat the following as regional examples and consult local Extension guidance.
Work with soil, wind, and rainfall
- Consider a soil test, plan the garden, and keep a journal.
- Use windbreaks to protect sensitive evergreens and replace mulch displaced by wind or weather.
- In Central and Eastern Oregon, the calendar advises watering certain plants deeply every six to eight weeks when temperatures are above freezing.
- In western Oregon, water plants sheltered from rain when needed, and stay off lawns until frost has melted.
Monitor before treating or pruning
Check landscape plants for problems rather than treating them automatically. Oregon State University Extension’s guidance is: “Monitor landscape plants for problems. Don’t treat unless a problem is identified.” For disease-related pruning, clean pruners before cutting infected branches, including cherry branches.

Georgia gardens
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension recommends using January to plan, inventory seeds and supplies, check seed viability, order what is needed, and start seeds indoors where local planting dates call for it. Its guidance says extreme south Georgia spring planting dates may be up to two weeks earlier than middle Georgia’s; that is a regional difference, not a general rule for other states.
A separate UGA garden calendar recommends preparing flats and sowing spring vegetables for transplanting in February and March. It also recommends planting fruit trees and consulting Extension for locally recommended varieties and pollinators. Follow local dates rather than treating those activities as appropriate for every Georgia garden.
Pruning and supplies: choose by task
January is not a blanket pruning window. Check the timing for the specific tree or shrub and remove storm damage when local guidance advises it. If disease is involved, clean tools before cuts. Bypass pruning shears may be useful for appropriate pruning jobs, but they are not a January essential for every gardener.
For regions that recommend indoor sowing, trays and seed-starting mix can help; first check what you already have. Landscape staples are useful where you need to secure winter-protection cages, as Minnesota Extension recommends. Buy supplies to match the task and local recommendation.
