A Google Home app teardown in April 2024 found references to possible new “Nest Audio” and “Nest Hub Max” devices, but it was not a product announcement. By August 2026, the evidence points to a broader shift toward Google Home-branded hardware: Google officially lists a Google Home Speaker (2026), while a possible “Google Home Display” remains unconfirmed.
What the 2024 Google Home app discovery actually showed
According to a 9to5Google teardown of Google Home app version 3.16, the code contained a device labelled “Nest Hub Max” alongside the existing 2019 model. It also contained another “Nest Audio” reference that appeared to indicate a possible successor. The report did not reveal an image, model number, specifications, launch date, regulatory filing or evidence of mass production. 9to5Google’s original report cautioned that APK discoveries can describe unfinished or cancelled work.
Why an APK clue is not a launch confirmation
App code can support internal testing, prototype hardware, regional variants, recycled identifiers or setup flows for products that never ship. A duplicate “Nest Hub Max” label is more specific than a generic placeholder, but it still does not prove that Google had finalized the hardware or intended to sell it. The correct description is “a possible device referenced in app code,” not “a confirmed Hub Max 2.”
The Nest Audio thread became a Google Home speaker story
The 2024 report also connected the speaker clue with an earlier hardware effort that may have involved ultra-wideband connectivity and a Fuchsia-based software plan. Later changes suggested that effort encountered a roadblock, and the available evidence does not establish that the reference became a retail second-generation Nest Audio.

In September 2025, Google Home app version 3.41 reportedly used the name “Google Home Speaker” and promoted 360-degree audio and Gemini for Home. Google’s official firmware documentation now lists Google Home Speaker (2026) separately from Google Nest Audio. That naming strongly suggests a change in product strategy, but it is an inference—not Google’s statement that the two products are identical.

What happened to a possible Hub Max successor?
Google’s public position became clearer without confirming a model. In October 2025, the company’s Google Home chief product officer said smart displays remained a priority because displays could become an important interface for Gemini for Home. That is a commitment to the category, not confirmation of a particular Nest Hub.
In May 2026, Android Authority reported that Google Home iOS app code referenced “Google Home Display.” The name could relate to a Hub Max successor, but code alone establishes neither the final name nor the screen size, camera, operating system, price, release date or availability. The report is therefore a newer clue, not a launch announcement.

Why Gemini for Home matters to the hardware roadmap
Google began U.S. early access for Gemini for Home on October 28, 2025, with expansion planned for additional countries in 2026. Google describes more conversational answers, natural-language smart-home control and Gemini Live through “Hey Google, let’s chat.” A display could give those capabilities a visual interface for controls, cameras, household status and answers; a speaker could provide better microphones and room-filling audio. Those are product rationales, not proof that a specific rumored device is imminent.

| Device | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|
| Google Home Speaker (2026) | An officially documented Google Home-branded speaker. |
| Google Nest Audio | The existing Nest-branded speaker remains separately recognized. |
| Nest Hub Max | The existing display remains listed with production firmware dated July 7, 2026 and preview firmware dated July 21, 2026. |
| Nest Hub (1st gen) and Nest Hub (2nd gen) | Existing display models remain in Google’s support ecosystem. |
| Google Home Max and Nest Mini | Other officially listed speaker products. |
The active firmware entry for Nest Hub Max means the reviewed official page does not establish that the model has been discontinued.
Buy now or wait?
| Reader | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Nest Audio owner | Keep it unless current performance is insufficient. | Nest Audio remains supported, and Gemini availability varies by device, country, rollout and subscription. |
| Existing Nest Hub Max owner | Keep using it if you need its screen and camera now. | No reviewed source confirms an immediate replacement, and the model continues to receive firmware updates. |
| First-time speaker buyer | Consider the officially listed Google Home Speaker (2026). | It reflects Google’s current branding direction; do not assume it is “Nest Audio 2.” |
| First-time display buyer | Buy a Nest Hub Max only if its current functions justify the purchase; otherwise wait. | A possible Home Display has no confirmed launch date, specifications or price. |
| Buyer focused on Gemini | Check eligibility and subscription requirements before buying. | Some advanced Gemini for Home features require Google Home Premium, and new hardware is not automatically required for every Gemini feature. |
Waiting offers a chance of newer hardware and a longer support runway, but the display could be delayed, cancelled or released under a different name. Buying offers immediate availability and access to currently supported features, but older hardware may not receive every future capability.
Verdict
The 2024 app teardown was a legitimate development clue, not proof that Google would launch named Nest Audio and Nest Hub Max successors. The speaker path appears to have evolved into Google Home branding, culminating in the officially documented Google Home Speaker (2026). A future Google Home Display is plausible and strategically consistent with Gemini for Home, but no reviewed source confirms a Nest Hub Max replacement. Buy existing hardware for a need you have now; wait only if newer display hardware or Google’s next platform is more important than certainty.
