Grow common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) in full sun and poor, sharply drained soil. Surface-sow the tiny seeds in autumn or spring, keep the soil surface lightly moist until seedlings establish, then reduce watering. Expect a large fuzzy leaf rosette in the first year and a tall yellow flower spike in the second. Because one plant can produce 100,000–180,000 seeds, check local invasive-species rules and remove flower spikes before they release seed if you need containment.

Know what to expect from mullein

Common mullein is a biennial. During its first growing season it forms a low, felted basal rosette. In the second, it sends up a tall flowering stem, produces yellow summer flowers, and usually dies after flowering. It can self-seed heavily, so a planting may persist even though each individual plant lives for about two growing seasons.

The Royal Horticultural Society lists an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 metres and a time to ultimate height of 2–5 years. Actual timing varies with climate, soil and establishment conditions.

Choose the right planting site

Sunlight

Use an open position receiving at least six hours of direct sun daily. Deep shade suppresses growth and reproduction, while abundant light supports the strongest plants and best germination.

Soil and drainage

Site condition Suitability Management
Full sun; poor, sandy or rocky soil Best match Usually little intervention after establishment
Full sun; average loam Usually suitable if well drained Avoid adding rich amendments; monitor for excess moisture
Heavy, wet or waterlogged soil Poor choice Select a raised or better-drained location instead
Deep shade Unsuitable Move the planting to an open, sunny site

When and how to sow mullein seeds

Kew Grow Wild’s instruction is: “Sow seed in autumn or spring on the surface of poor, well-drained soil in full sun.” Mullein seed needs light, so do not bury it.

  1. Clear competing weeds and loosen the surface of the chosen poor, well-drained site.
  2. Scatter Verbascum thapsus seed on the surface, or press each seed gently onto the soil.
  3. Leave the seed uncovered. Covering it can block the light needed for germination.
  4. Water gently so the seed is not washed away, then keep the surface from drying during establishment.
  5. Thin crowded seedlings once they are easy to handle, leaving space for each first-year rosette to develop.

Warm conditions and light are associated with the greatest germination rates, but no universal germination percentage applies to every seed lot. If buying common mullein seeds, verify the botanical name, seller provenance and whether planting is lawful in your area.

Watering and seasonal care

First year

Water newly sown areas and young seedlings when the surface begins to dry. Once roots are established, allow the soil to dry between waterings. The plant’s documented drought tolerance and intolerance of wet soil support reducing irrigation rather than maintaining constantly moist ground.

Control self-seeding and check invasive status

Common mullein is introduced across the lower 48 United States, Alaska, Canada and Hawaii, according to USDA records. USDA and invasive-species references report it as invasive in multiple U.S. states, but status is regional rather than universal. Check your state, provincial or local rules before planting or allowing it to spread.

A single parent plant has been reported to produce 100,000–180,000 seeds. To contain a planting:

Diagnose common mullein problems

Symptom or pest Likely response
Weak, floppy flower stalk Reduce excess fertility, confirm strong light and stake the stem if necessary.
Slow growth or poor flowering in shade Move future plantings to a site with at least six hours of direct sun.
Yellowing, decline or persistent soggy soil Improve drainage or relocate; mullein does not tolerate wet ground.
Fine webbing or stippled leaves in hot weather Check for spider mites and improve plant-site conditions.
Ragged leaves or seedlings eaten overnight Inspect for slugs, snails or caterpillars and remove them using locally appropriate controls.
Distorted growth or chewing damage Look for figwort weevil activity.
White powdery coating on leaves Improve air movement, sunlight and drainage; powdery mildews are reported on mullein.

Plan care around your priorities

Goal Placement and care Key risk
Naturalized ornamental stand Full sun, poor drained soil; allow some seed to mature Unwanted spread or local restrictions
Single specimen or controlled display Surface-sow in a contained bed; remove the spike before capsules open Volunteer seedlings outside the bed
Wildlife or restoration planting Confirm the species is appropriate and permitted locally before sowing Displacement of native plants where invasive
