Google announced a broader redesign of the app on October 1, but its release notes do not connect the editor to device or setup problems. The editor adds ways to build automations with starters, actions and optional conditions; it is still missing some features available elsewhere in Google Home.
What changed, and when?
The dates mark two different milestones. Google’s release notes date the new automation editor to version 3.40 on September 19, 2025. On October 1, Google announced a wider redesign of the Home app, describing a rebuilt native experience for iOS and Android. The October announcement also highlighted one-time automations and conditional starters. Google’s release notes and its redesign announcement should not be read as a single launch date for the editor.
Bryant Herron-Patmon, Google Home’s Director of Product Management, said the app was rebuilt “to make it faster, more reliable and complete,” based on user feedback. Google reported that live views loaded 30% faster and playback failures decreased 40%; it also said camera-history scrolling had a more than 6x higher frame rate and that the app had received more than 100 feature and performance improvements over the year. These are Google’s own reported results, not independent measurements.
What can you build with the editor?
The improved editor is for household automations. You can combine a starter—the event that begins an automation—with actions and optional conditions that determine whether it should run. Conditions include the day of the week, presence, and device state. For example, an automation could be set to run only when someone is home or a particular device is on. A starter is required for an automation to start automatically.

The Automations tab lists household automations and indicates whether each is active or inactive. Google describes one-time automations as part of the redesigned app, and says upcoming automations appear in that tab. Household automations are not Personal Routines
Google directs users to a separate flow for Personal Routines; the improved editor described here is for household automations. If you do not see a Personal Routine in the household automation editor, that distinction is why. Use the appropriate flow for the kind of routine you want to create.

What are the editor’s limitations?
Google’s Help page says integration of all features into the improved editor is ongoing. Pulse effects on lights are one example of a feature not yet available there, so the new editor should not be treated as feature-complete.
Google also documents a way to return to the previous household editor. Loading that editor discards changes made to the current automation. If you need an older-editor feature, account for that loss before switching; do not assume your unfinished edits will carry over.

Are device or setup issues caused by the editor?
The documented evidence does not establish a connection. Google’s release notes cover fixes across the app and devices, including setup-flow crashes, Android casting crashes, camera reliability and online-status corrections, setup interruptions, and later camera-connectivity and setup improvements. They show that reliability work continued alongside the editor rollout, but do not say the editor caused those problems.
Two TechRadar reports provide separate context, not evidence of a link. An October 1, 2026 report described early-access updates involving more accurate smart-light shutoff, a clearer offline status for Matter switches, Wi-Fi pairing changes, and camera-history fixes, attributing the updates to Google’s notes. A September 3, 2026 report covered setup difficulties affecting some first-generation Chromecast, 2015 Chromecast, and Google Home Mini owners. Google described expanded automation traits for monitoring robot vacuums and battery levels in a May 2026 update. Those later capabilities should not be assumed to have arrived with app version 3.40 in September 2025; see Google’s May 2026 update.
