La fabricación básica de herramientas de acero empieza por aprender herrería segura y entender para qué sirve cada útil: martillo para golpear, punzón para marcar o perforar y cincel para cortar. No existe un acero único adecuado para todas las herramientas; la elección depende de la tarea, las propiedades buscadas y el tratamiento previsto. Para iniciarse, conviene seguir formación actual y usar los manuales históricos como contexto, no como instrucciones operativas.
Qué se aprende en herrería básica
El currículo de Level I de la California Blacksmith Association ofrece una referencia concreta de habilidades iniciales. Incluye seguridad, identificación de las partes de la forja, el yunque y el tornillo de banco, familiarización con martillos y tipos de golpes, y trabajo con cinceles y punzones. También contempla destrezas de forja y tratamiento térmico de cinceles y punzones.
Ese currículo exige, para su certificado, realizar un proyecto de pestillo y superar una prueba de seguridad. Es el programa de una asociación específica, no una definición universal de lo que debe incluir todo curso de herrería.
Herramientas de inicio: función antes que modelo

Estas categorías orientan una lista inicial por función, no una recomendación de compra. Para elegir un útil concreto, comprueba que su geometría, dimensiones y material sean compatibles con la pieza, la técnica y el equipo disponibles.

Cómo pensar la selección del acero
“Acero para herramientas” abarca familias con composiciones y propiedades distintas, no una aleación única para cualquier uso. ASM International señala que la selección puede implicar compromisos entre dureza, resistencia al desgaste, tenacidad y estabilidad dimensional, además de características de fabricación como maquinabilidad, rectificabilidad, soldabilidad y templabilidad. Su capítulo de referencia, “Tool Steels” (1998), explica estas dimensiones, pero no recomienda un grado específico para una herramienta cuyo diseño y uso no se han definido.
- Define la tarea: golpear, marcar o perforar, y cortar imponen exigencias distintas.
- Identifica la herramienta y sus condiciones de trabajo: el diseño y el contacto con la pieza importan tanto como el nombre del acero.
- Consulta especificaciones actuales: busca el material y el tratamiento declarados por el fabricante y sigue sus indicaciones para la herramienta concreta.
- Verifica los requisitos locales: una norma listada en un índice no necesariamente es obligatoria en tu país o para tu aplicación.
Sin una herramienta y un proceso definidos, no hay base para recomendar un grado de acero ni valores de dureza. Tampoco es prudente trasladar parámetros de tratamiento térmico de una herramienta a otra.

Seguridad y límites de una guía general
La seguridad forma parte de las destrezas iniciales del programa de la California Blacksmith Association, que también incluye una prueba de seguridad. El título no especifica una herramienta, un acero, una instalación ni un método; por eso, una explicación general no puede establecer temperaturas, tiempos de calentamiento, medios de enfriamiento o dimensiones de equipo que sean seguros para todos los casos.
Para fabricar o tratar una herramienta concreta, identifica primero el acero y el uso previsto. Sigue las instrucciones actuales del fabricante y busca formación presencial competente para las operaciones de forja y tratamiento térmico. No tomes un texto histórico como sustituto de esas indicaciones.

La Library of Congress conserva Manual of blacksmithing, publicado en Chicago por The Gerlotte Publishing Co. en 1902. El catálogo describe una obra ilustrada de 158 páginas, disponible en línea en varios formatos, incluido PDF, y señala que está en dominio público. Puede servir como lectura histórica y referencia visual; por su fecha, sus consejos sobre aceros, procesos y prácticas no deben asumirse como recomendaciones actuales.
El PDF digitalizado del manual contiene categorías y consejos propios de una obra de comienzos del siglo XX. Úsalo para comprender el contexto de la herrería, no para copiar tratamientos o procedimientos sin validarlos con una fuente contemporánea apropiada.

Normas: comprueba el país y el documento completo
El índice público Public Safety Standards of India, PGD 6 enumera documentos relativos a herramientas para trabajar tierra, metal y madera, incluidos cinceles fríos, yunques de herrero y martillos de acero. Que un índice registre normas con determinados años no demuestra por sí solo que sean obligatorias en otros países ni que correspondan a cada uso. Consulta el texto original, su vigencia y la jurisdicción aplicable antes de tratar una norma como requisito.
