You look through the sheet at a visible scene while also seeing the reflected figure superimposed on it. The result resembles a hologram, but it is a reflected-light optical illusion, not true holography.
How Pepper’s Ghost works
A clear pane does not generate an image. It performs two jobs at once:
- It transmits light from the visible background or set.
- It reflects part of the light from a separately lit hidden performer, object, screen or printed image toward the viewer.
When the hidden source is bright enough and its surroundings are relatively dark, the reflected image appears to occupy the visible scene. Reducing unwanted reflections on the pane makes the figure easier to see.
The classic theatre arrangement placed a large sheet of glass between the audience and the stage. A concealed performer or scene was illuminated out of the audience’s direct view, and the glass reflected that light toward the seats. Royal Collection Trust teaching material describes the historical setup as “A large sheet of glass was positioned at the front of the stage, set at a 45° angle.” That angle is a useful starting point, not a mandatory specification for every tabletop build.

What you need for a small display
- Clear acrylic or transparent plastic sheet: This is the reflecting surface. Keep it clean and free of scratches, fingerprints and protective-film residue.
- A visible background or scene: This can be a small set, backdrop or display area that remains visible through the sheet.
- A separate hidden image source: Use an object, printed figure, screen or other image positioned outside the viewer’s direct line of sight.
- A small adjustable LED light: The hidden source must be illuminated for its reflection to register.
- A stable support: The pane must hold its angle without vibrating or sliding as people view the display.
The Ontario Science Centre’s “Haunted ‘Hologram’” activity uses a plastic sheet and emphasizes the distinction between this reflection effect and a true hologram. The available educational sources do not establish a universal sheet thickness, exact dimensions or required light output, so choose a size that fits your enclosure and tune the arrangement from the intended viewing position.
How to make a Pepper’s Ghost illusion
- Choose the viewing position. Decide where the audience will stand or sit. The illusion is angle-dependent, so build and adjust it while looking from that position rather than from above or from the side.
- Install the visible scene. Place the background or set behind the future pane. It should be sufficiently visible through the transparent material, without bright lamps aimed at the viewer.
- Mount the transparent sheet. Set the plastic or acrylic pane between the viewer and the scene. Begin with a geometry close to the historical 45-degree arrangement, then change the tilt until the reflected image lands where you want it. There is no single correct angle for every enclosure.
- Hide the image source. Position the performer, object, printed figure or screen in a separate area so the audience cannot see it directly. Its light must strike the pane and reflect toward the viewing position.
- Light the hidden source. Use the adjustable LED to illuminate the hidden image. Start with the surrounding area dimmer than the source; increase or redirect the light until the reflection is readable without washing out the scene.
- Block stray reflections. Darken or cover bright surfaces around the pane, and move room lights that appear as glare. Clean the sheet and inspect it from the audience position.
- Fine-tune alignment. Slide or tilt the pane, and move the hidden source, until the reflected figure appears in the desired part of the scene. Check the effect from the actual range of audience positions.
- Secure the final setup. Once aligned, brace the sheet and cable the light so a small bump cannot change the angle or expose the hidden source.

The small version changes the scale and the available hiding space; it does not use a different optical trick.

Lighting and alignment fixes
The ghost is too faint
- Increase illumination on the hidden image or move the LED closer, while avoiding a direct view of the lamp.
- Dim competing lights around the visible scene and the front of the pane.
- Check that the hidden source is actually aimed at the pane rather than away from it.
You can see the hidden source directly
Move it farther to the side or below the viewing line, add an opaque divider, or revise the enclosure. The audience should receive its light by reflection, not by a direct line of sight.
The figure appears in the wrong place
Change the pane’s tilt and the hidden source’s position together. Small changes can move the reflected image substantially, so make adjustments while watching from the intended audience location.

The pane shows distracting glare
Remove fingerprints, turn bright room or work lights away from the sheet, and darken reflective surfaces near the viewer. A darker surrounding area generally gives the reflected image more contrast, although the sources do not specify a universal brightness ratio.
The effect works only from one spot
That is normal for a compact, angle-dependent arrangement. Widen the viewing zone by experimenting with the pane and source positions, or define a single marked viewing position for the display.

History and terminology
The illusion was first performed in 1862. It is named for John Henry Pepper, who helped turn the apparatus into a practical stage trick. Henry Dircks is also associated with the apparatus’s development; historical accounts from the Corning Museum of Glass describe the work as involving both Dircks and Pepper. Calling the effect a “hologram” is convenient shorthand for its ghostlike appearance, but technically inaccurate: no light field or genuinely three-dimensional projected image is being created.
Safety and build quality
- Use a pane with smooth edges and secure it so it cannot topple onto viewers.
- Support the sheet independently rather than relying on tape alone for a freestanding display.
- Keep LED wiring away from moving parts and protect connections from spills.
- Do not place hot lamps close to plastic; an adjustable LED is preferable for a small enclosure.
- Test the display at the audience’s eye level before inviting people to handle or approach it.
What this DIY method can—and cannot—do
A carefully aligned sheet, hidden illuminated image and controlled background can produce a convincing floating figure in a small display. The exact pane size, thickness, angle and illumination depend on the enclosure and viewing geometry rather than on one universal recipe. For a larger public installation, the same principle scales to a substantial glass pane, concealed performance area and controlled stage lighting, but structural support, access and audience sightlines become engineering and production concerns.
