Desk Lighting: Should Light Be in Front of or Behind Your Computer?

Place the monitor to avoid direct and reflected glare, and aim task lighting at paper—not the screen. There is no universal front-or-behind rule.

Neither position is automatically right. Arrange your desk so bright light does not shine into your eyes or reflect off the monitor. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends placing a display at right angles to windows and other light sources; in many rooms, that means putting a window to the side of the screen. Check the view from your usual seat, since the best arrangement depends on the room and screen angle.

How to position your computer and room lighting

Direct light on the screen can make it harder to see, while bright sources behind a display can create contrast problems. Rather than following a simple “light in front” or “light behind” rule, use the screen from your normal sitting position to spot reflections and bright sources in your line of sight. OSHA recommends positioning the display at right angles to windows and light sources where practical. OSHA’s workstation guidance explains the glare and contrast concerns.

  1. Check the screen from your normal seat. Look for reflections and for bright windows or fixtures that make the display difficult to read.
  2. Reposition the monitor if needed. Where the room allows, place the screen at right angles to the window or troublesome light source. A window beside the desk often works better than one directly in front of or behind the display.
  3. Control daylight and direct light. Use adjustable blinds or drapes if a window causes glare. Angle the monitor or nearby lighting so light does not reflect toward your eyes.
  4. Choose diffuse, controlled ambient lighting. OSHA recommends well-distributed, diffuse light and indirect or shielded sources where possible. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) notes that indirect fixtures can provide more even illumination and reduce direct glare. See CCOHS’s overview of lighting ergonomics.
  5. Recheck the screen and any work beside it. Make sure the display remains readable and that you can see paper documents clearly without adding reflections to the monitor.

Where to put a desk lamp when you work with paper

A monitor produces its own light and does not need a lamp aimed at it. Paper beside the screen may need extra illumination, so place an adjustable task lamp to light the page while keeping its beam off the display and out of your eyes. A shade or diffuser can help control the light. OSHA and CCOHS both recommend task lighting for paper work while limiting excess brightness near monitors; see CCOHS’s guidance on eye discomfort in the office.

A lamp can sit in front of or beside the monitor if its beam is directed at the document rather than the screen. Avoid aiming a bare or intense source toward the display. If a paper task is the reason the desk feels too dim, adjust the task light rather than adding a bright source that creates screen glare.

Adjust brightness and reflections before adding a filter

Set the monitor’s brightness and contrast to suit the room, and reduce shiny surfaces near the display where practical. CCOHS cautions that anything placed between the user and screen can compromise image quality, so first address glare through lighting and monitor placement. OSHA lists glare filters as a possible measure, but says they should not significantly reduce screen visibility. A filter is therefore a later option if basic adjustments do not solve the problem—not a substitute for controlling the light source.

How much light is enough?

There is no single illumination figure in the cited guidance that serves as a universal target for every computer desk. OSHA gives general guidance of 20–50 foot-candles for paper tasks and offices with CRT displays, and up to 73 foot-candles for similar viewing tasks with LCD monitors. These are workplace-oriented figures, not a universal prescription for a home setup; see OSHA’s workstation environment guidance.

CCOHS discusses 300–500 lux in the context where no task lamp is in use, and explicitly says that range is not a must. It should not be treated as a required brightness for a computer screen. The practical check is whether the screen is comfortable to read, paper is adequately lit for the task, and reflections or glare are not distracting.
