Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a large deciduous conifer best suited to a spacious, sunny site with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It can reach 70–100 feet tall with a 15–25-foot spread, so choose its location with the mature tree in mind. Its needles turning color and dropping in fall is a normal part of its annual cycle.
Is a dawn redwood right for your site?
Size is the first consideration. Penn State Extension reports a mature height of 70–100 feet and a spread of 15–25 feet. Under the conditions described by the extension, a tree may reach 50 feet in 15–20 years. These figures make dawn redwood a poor fit for a small garden or a site with limited room for a large tree.
Penn State recommends the species for large properties and institutional or public landscapes. It can serve as a specimen tree or be planted in a grove or allée; it is also listed as an option for a large rain garden. Plan for the eventual canopy and height when selecting the site rather than relying on the tree’s size when young.
What growing conditions does it prefer?
Sun and soil
Dawn redwood grows best in full sun and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, according to Penn State Extension. The extension also notes that it tolerates moist areas. That does not establish that it will thrive in every soil or in permanently standing water.

Moisture
Keep the site preference in mind: the species favors moist soil, but a single watering schedule cannot be recommended for every climate, tree age, and site. The cited cultivation guidance does not specify watering frequency or planting-depth instructions, so avoid treating a fixed schedule or depth as a universal rule.
Why does a dawn redwood lose its needles?
Dawn redwood is a deciduous conifer: it produces needles, then sheds them in autumn and grows new foliage in spring. Fall needle drop is expected seasonal behavior and does not, by itself, mean the tree has died. Penn State describes new foliage as bright green, changing to reddish-orange and russet-brown in fall. Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum describes its foliage as feathery and its autumn color as deep bronze; its plant record documents living specimens in the collection.

What cultivars are available?
Penn State names several foliage or form selections, but cultivar names should not be treated as proof of current nursery availability or identity. Compare any named selection with the space and appearance you want, and confirm the plant’s label with a reputable seller.
