Its published overall dimensions are 33 inches wide by 16 inches deep by 74 inches high. It is a furniture woodworking plan, not a stated or tested gun safe; decide separately how firearms will be secured.
What the plan is designed to build
WOOD Magazine featured the project in WOOD Issue 185 in September 2008. The publisher’s plan page was updated January 16, 2024. It describes two intended uses: a display cabinet for hunting rifles and shotguns, or a display cabinet for glassware and collectibles. The gun-cabinet configuration is listed for six firearms.
That capacity is the publisher’s stated figure, not a guarantee that every combination of six firearms will fit. Individual firearm dimensions and the accuracy of the completed build affect fit; the listing does not provide a model-by-model compatibility list. Check the plan and measure the items you intend to display before committing to the project.
Dimensions and room fit
The published overall dimensions are 33 × 16 × 74 inches (width × depth × height). Measure the intended location, including doorway and turning clearance for moving a tall cabinet into position. The listing gives overall dimensions; it does not establish usable interior dimensions or clearances for particular firearms.

What the plan listing says about the build
WOOD Magazine’s page describes the project and links to the WOOD Store. A separate retailer listing describes paper and PDF versions and says its plans include building instructions, finishing guidance, scaled templates and a materials list. That retailer names walnut, walnut plywood, poplar and birch plywood for its described build, while noting that wood choice can vary. Treat those as retailer listing details, not a verified bill of materials for every plan version.
Tools and preparation
The retailer lists a table saw, clamps, biscuit joiner, router, drill press, miter saw, bandsaw, drum sander and hand tools. Confirm the exact requirements against the instructions for the edition you buy; availability of tools and material choices may affect how you approach the project.

Plan use and permissions
The retailer says buying the instructional plan does not transfer copyright ownership and that reproducing the plan or selling the finished project requires permission under its stated terms. Check the current terms of the seller from whom you purchase; do not assume a plan purchase grants those rights.
Display furniture is not a tested gun safe
The plan description states the cabinet’s purpose, capacity and dimensions, but does not state that the completed cabinet has a security rating, has been tested against forced entry, or meets a firearm-storage certification. A wooden display cabinet should therefore not be represented as theft-proof, certified or compliant based on this listing. Visible display and secure storage are different requirements.

For U.S. households, ATF advises that when children are in the home, owners should use child safety locks or other commercially available locking mechanisms on firearms and/or keep firearms locked in a secure location accessible only to adults. ATF also advises keeping ammunition locked away from firearms and following applicable federal, state and local laws. These are general safety points, not an evaluation of this cabinet. ATF describes qualifying secure-storage or safety devices as including firearm-mounted devices that prevent operation until deactivated, devices built into firearms for that purpose, and safes, gun safes, gun cases or lock boxes designed to be unlocked only by a key, combination or similar method. The plan page does not say that such a device is included or that the cabinet itself meets that description. ATF notes that “Zip ties, rope, and string do not meet this definition.” Consult ATF’s secure-storage device FAQ and applicable local rules when choosing a separate locking solution.

How to decide whether this project suits your needs
- Choose it for display and woodworking: The stated dual use and furniture dimensions may suit a room where a tall cabinet for firearms or collectibles is wanted.
- Check actual fit: Compare the plan’s interior arrangement with the dimensions of the firearms or objects you intend to display; the six-item capacity alone does not establish fit for every collection.
- Choose a separate security solution when needed: If your priority is resistance to forced entry, removal or unauthorized access, assess a purpose-designed locking product or secure storage option rather than infer protection from the cabinet’s appearance.
- Check local requirements: Applicable rules depend on location. The UK Home Office handbook addresses security of firearms in private collections and venues under a UK context; its provisions and referenced standards should not be treated as U.S. law or universal requirements. When comparing this project with another cabinet or storage option, distinguish visible from concealed storage, whether the firearm itself or the container is locked, resistance to forced entry and removal, anchoring and key control, usable capacity and dimensions, and any applicable local rule or tested standard. No measured security rating for this woodworking plan is established by its published description.
