Sometimes—but only if the rug’s care label allows machine washing and your washer’s manual does not prohibit it. Instructions differ: Maytag recommends checking the rug label, Samsung’s manual warns against washing rubber-backed rugs in its washer, and Mohawk Home permits machine washing for certain specified latex-backed rugs.
Why the answer depends on both the rug and the washer
“Rubber-backed” does not mean every rug has the same backing or care requirements. A rug manufacturer’s directions apply to the products and sizes they describe; they are not a general rule for all rubber-backed rugs. The washer matters too. Samsung’s manual says, “Do not wash throw rugs or doormats with rubber backing.” It warns that backing can come off, stick to the drum and contribute to a washer malfunction, such as a drainage error. Check these instructions before washing
- Read the rug’s care label. Confirm whether machine washing is permitted and note any specified cycle, water temperature, load or drying instructions. If it says spot clean or professional clean, do not machine wash it.
- Check the washer manual for your model. Look for restrictions on rubber-backed rugs or doormats. A prohibition in the manual overrides general advice for washable rugs.
- Confirm the rug fits the permitted load. Follow the rug and washer instructions about size and load suitability; the sources do not establish one size limit that applies to every pair of products.
- Use the specified drying method. Do not assume that air-drying or tumble-drying is safe for every backing. Follow the rug’s label.
If both sets of instructions allow machine washing
Use the rug maker’s directions for the particular rug. Where the label permits washing but does not specify a cycle or water temperature, Maytag’s general guidance for a rug confirmed as washable is a gentle or delicate cycle with cold water. If machine washing is not allowed
Use only a cleaning method permitted by the rug’s care instructions. Maytag describes hand washing in cool water with mild detergent for a rug too large for a washer, and also mentions carpet-cleaning equipment or professional cleaning.
