Start with the rug’s care label and your washer manual: only machine-wash a rug if its label permits it. If it is washable and the tag gives no specific settings, Whirlpool and Maytag recommend cold water on a Delicate or Gentle cycle. For a bathroom rug with water-resistant backing, Whirlpool advises lowering the spin speed. These are starting points, not settings that suit every rug or washer.
Choose settings from the rug label first
Material and construction affect whether a rug can tolerate machine washing. Do not assume a rug is washable just because it is small or looks sturdy. Follow the rug’s care label and the washer’s manual; either may give instructions that differ from the general guidance below.
| Rug or situation | Setting guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Machine-washable rug with no specific cycle or temperature on its label | Cold water; Delicate or Gentle cycle | This is the general fallback from Whirlpool and Maytag. Follow the tag if it specifies another setting. |
| Bathroom rug with water-resistant backing | Lower spin speed | Whirlpool’s bathroom-mat guidance recommends this to help preserve the backing. It is not a universal spin rule for every rug. |
| Small washable rug listed as a bulky item in your washer manual | Use the cycle guide for that washer | A Whirlpool owner’s manual includes small washable rugs in its Bulky cycle category; that guidance applies to the referenced model, not all washers. |
| Large, heavy, or absorbent rug | Check washer capacity and load guidance before choosing a cycle | It may exceed capacity or be difficult for the washer to spin. Consider hand washing or professional cleaning if it is too large for the machine. |
| Rug not labeled machine-washable, or made from a material its maker cautions against washing | Do not assume machine washing is safe | Use the rug maker’s care instructions or a suitable alternative. |
Why there is no universal spin speed
The manufacturer guidance does not establish a single RPM that is safe for every rug and washer. The specific recommendation is to lower spin speed for water-resistant-backed bathroom rugs. For other rugs, use the rug label and your washer’s cycle guide; available cycles and spin options vary by model.
Check material, size, and backing before washing
Material and construction
Manufacturer guidance identifies cotton and some synthetic rugs as more likely to be washer-friendly. Maytag lists cotton, polyester, acrylic, nylon, polypropylene, and chenille as materials typically suitable for machine washing, while warning that wool, silk, jute, and shag are typically unsuitable. These are general categories, not permission to wash a particular rug: its care label is the deciding factor.

Size and capacity
Small mats and kitchen rugs may fit a standard washer, but the washer’s capacity and weight limits still apply. Large rugs can be too cumbersome for the spin cycle or exceed capacity. If yours does not fit comfortably within the washer’s guidance, Maytag suggests hand washing or professional carpet cleaning instead.
Water-resistant backing
Backed bathroom rugs need special attention because a vigorous spin may put stress on the backing. Whirlpool says, “For a water-resistant backing, lower the washer spin speed to help preserve the material.” The advice is specific to water-resistant-backed bathroom mats.

How to wash a machine-washable rug
- Check the label and washer guide. Confirm the rug is machine-washable, then check the washer’s capacity and cycle guidance. A washer manual may classify a small washable rug under a model-specific cycle such as Bulky.
- Remove loose dirt and treat stains. Vacuum both sides. Spot-treat stains, testing the treatment on a hidden area first to check for color change.
- Balance the load as your washer maker directs. Whirlpool’s bathroom-rug advice suggests adding towels when washing a rug alone to help balance the load. Separate top-load product guidance says not to wash one absorbent rug alone in the configuration it covers and suggests two or three rugs for balance. Those counts are specific to that guidance; do not apply them to every washer.
- Add detergent and select the cycle and temperature. Follow the detergent package and washer instructions. Use the rug’s stated settings; if it is washable but the tag gives no cycle or temperature, choose cold water and Delicate or Gentle. Avoid heavy-duty settings, bleach, and fabric softener unless the rug label permits them.
- Adjust spin and rinse if needed. Lower spin speed for water-resistant backing. An extra rinse may help remove soapy residue.
- Dry according to the care label. Air-dry or use a dryer only if the label allows it. Maytag describes hanging or laying a rug flat to air-dry; a no-heat dryer setting may be an option when the label permits.
