Better Homes & Gardens named Gongshi Vacuum Storage Bags its best overall pick after testing 16 products, but its other winners may fit your needs better if you’re storing bedding, packing for travel, or hanging coats. The results below come from BHG’s 24-hour test, so they show how the bags performed in that setup—not how long they will stay compressed over months or years.
How BHG tested the bags
In an article updated August 31, 2026, Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) says it tested 16 types of vacuum storage bags. Its evaluations covered capacity, plastic thickness, seal strength, compression, packing speed, fit on shelves or beneath a queen bed, and hanging where applicable. BHG also submerged filled bags for one minute and checked the contents and seals after 24 hours. For products supplied with hand pumps, it compared a pump-sealed bag with a vacuum-sealed one.
These are short, product-specific tests. They do not establish long-term seal performance, and a result for one bag should not be treated as a prediction for every product in its category. The recommendations and test results below are BHG’s, not independent testing by this site.

Choose by what you’re storing
Bedding and bulky linens
Woolite’s bedding pick held a duvet insert and two sheet sets in BHG’s test. For a larger mixed load, BHG fit two pillows and three sheet sets in a MagicBag, with room below the fill line. Those are test examples, not guaranteed capacities: check the bag’s stated dimensions against your linens and intended storage space.

Travel and packing without a vacuum
Hibag includes a roll-up carry-on-size bag and hand pump, making it a practical format to consider when a vacuum is unavailable. BHG’s small-bag comparison found greater compression with the hand pump than with a vacuum for this set, but its broader testing also found that hand pumping often took at least a minute longer. Method performance varied between products, so do not assume a pump or vacuum always wins.
Coats and other hanging garments
Taili’s hanging bags are intended for items that benefit from staying on hangers. BHG fit five hip-length coats with hangers in one large bag. Consider whether you have enough closet height and room to load it comfortably; the tester found its long-edge zipper awkward.

Sorting small loads or storing bags on shelves
A variety pack can help separate seasonal items or household linens into manageable groups. Cozy Essential offers multiple sizes, though BHG found that the sizes were not labeled. For shelf storage, look closely at whether a product is genuinely structured as a cube: BHG found Woolite’s product was essentially a regular vacuum-seal bag.
What to check before buying
- Capacity and dimensions: Match the bag to the items and to the shelf, closet, or under-bed space where it will go. BHG’s test examples ranged from up to two bath towels in small bags to as many as three pillows, a duvet cover, and two sheet sets in jumbo bags; these are not brand-wide capacity guarantees.
- Closure and valve: Inspect how the zipper or locking closure works, how the valve and cap fit, and whether the bag looks practical to open and reseal. BHG’s test found variation in zipper ease and perceived sturdiness.
- Air-removal method: Check whether a pump is included, whether a vacuum is required, or whether the bag can be rolled to push out air. A pump may add portability, while a vacuum may be faster in some setups; BHG’s product comparisons did not show one universal winner.
- Fabric suitability: Not every textile is a good candidate for airtight compression. Organizer Michele Vig, founder of Neat Little Nest, recommends breathable storage such as linen boxes for natural fabrics like cashmere. Jill Moore, owner of Organized Jill Professional Home Organization, cautions that fabrics can react differently without air circulation.
- How often you need access: If you frequently retrieve and reseal items, compression bags may be less convenient than a container that stays accessible. Store clean, fully dry items, avoid sharp objects that could puncture the plastic, and rotate stored contents seasonally. Moore advises using and enjoying stored items rather than keeping them packed away indefinitely.
Are vacuum storage bags waterproof?
Do not treat them as flood protection. BHG’s six picks kept contents dry in a one-minute submersion test, but that brief test does not establish long-term waterproof performance. Moore describes vacuum storage bags as water resistant and warns that a bag submerged in floodwater could carry a mold or mildew risk.

Do vacuum storage bags actually save space?
They can reduce the space occupied by compressible items, but results depend on the product, contents, and sealing method. BHG’s measured compression figures came from specific test loads and bags; they are not a general percentage for every bag or fabric. Moore told BHG, “When used correctly, they can absolutely save space,” while also cautioning against overstuffing bags for extended storage.

Not always. Some bags include hand pumps, and roll-up styles let you press air out without a vacuum. BHG’s test found that pump-versus-vacuum performance varied: its Gongshi vacuum-sealed bag held more of the test load and sealed faster, while its Hibag hand-pumped bag compressed more in the small-bag comparison.
